mem-setupPairs the claude-mem Cowork plugin with a cmem.ai account by writing the sync token, user id and SyncHub URL into the plugin config without exposing the secret.
This skill fills in the credentials that the claude-mem-cowork plugin needs to capture and inject memory through cmem.ai. You supply three values from the Connect page: a sync token that starts with cm_, a user id and a SyncHub URL. If you paste the whole Connect text, the agent pulls the values out itself, and only the token is required.
Secrets are handled with care. The token is never echoed in the conversation, placed on a command line or logged, and it moves only through file writes and reads. The agent edits the plugin's config.json (apiKey, userId, syncHubUrl) and leaves the other settings alone unless you ask.
Cowork containers are ephemeral, so the skill explains that a permanent pairing means repackaging the plugin as a .plugin zip for you to reinstall. If a local ~/.claude-mem directory exists, it can also write matching keys to settings.json with restricted permissions. Success is checked with the plugin's cmem-hook.mjs status command, which prints a masked result, and environment variables such as CMEM_API_KEY can replace the file edits.
3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 71ddd11. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
nodeFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:
CLAUDE_MEM_CLOUD_SYNC_TOKENCMEM_API_KEYFrom names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Claude-Mem Cowork Pairing loads about 659 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 76 tokens; SKILL.md has 309 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

.claude/skills/mem-setup/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder).Configure this plugin with the user's own cmem.ai credentials so hooks can capture and inject memory. Anyone can pair — credentials are per-user configuration, never hardcoded in plugin logic.
From cmem.ai → Connect, the user has three values:
cm_) — used as the bearer API keyIf the user pastes the whole Connect blurb, extract the three values from it. If any are missing, ask for the sync token at minimum — the other two are optional.
Locate the installed plugin root (this skill's own plugin). Update its
config.json: set apiKey to the sync token, userId, and syncHubUrl.
Leave other settings unless the user asks (inject toggles). Project naming
is automatic (cmem_work_*) and is not configurable.
Cowork containers are ephemeral: edits to the installed copy last only for
this session. To make pairing permanent, repackage — zip the plugin
directory as <plugin-name>.plugin and send it to the user to re-install
(the cowork-plugin skill's packaging flow). Tell the user this is why.
If this machine also has a local claude-mem install (a ~/.claude-mem/
directory exists), optionally write the same values to
~/.claude-mem/settings.json with mode 0600 (CLAUDE_MEM_CLOUD_SYNC_TOKEN,
CLAUDE_MEM_CLOUD_SYNC_USER_ID, CLAUDE_MEM_CLOUD_SYNC_HUB_URL keys — the
same keys the local claude-mem cloud-sync pairing writes) — the hook script
and the local worker both read it.
Verify without exposing the secret:
node "${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/scripts/cmem-hook.mjs" statusReport the masked output. A MISSING key means the write didn't land;
a 404 on /api/hooks/context is expected until the Pro endpoints deploy
(search/injection still work via /api/mcp).
Env vars override everything and need no file edits: CMEM_API_KEY,
CMEM_USER_ID, CMEM_SYNC_HUB_URL, CMEM_API_BASE.

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Claude-Mem Cowork Pairing needs the command-line tools its instructions call (node) and credentials named CLAUDE_MEM_CLOUD_SYNC_TOKEN and CMEM_API_KEY. Our summary lists: A cmem.ai account with the Connect values (sync token, user id, SyncHub URL); The claude-mem-cowork plugin installed; Node.js to run the cmem-hook.mjs status check.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Claude-Mem Cowork Pairing is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 659 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2.6k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
