forgetful-mcp-setupConnects an MCP client to the Forgetful memory server over stdio or HTTP, then confirms the link works with discovery and round-trip calls.
Every MCP client connecting to Forgetful sees the same three tools: one that lists tool categories, one that returns the docs and schema for a single tool, and one that runs a tool by name with a JSON arguments object. This skill walks you through pointing a client at the server, using Claude Code as the worked example with `claude mcp add` for both stdio (`uvx forgetful-ai`) and HTTP (`http://localhost:8020/mcp`).
It also covers authentication and scopes. A local server runs without auth for a single user, while deployed servers use bearer tokens or OAuth, and a `FORGETFUL_SCOPES` setting on the server can cap a client at read-only. Setup counts as finished only when discovery returns categories matching the server's enabled features and one real call, such as `get_current_user` or `list_projects`, returns data in a fresh session.
Subagents do not inherit MCP tool access, so memory calls stay in the main conversation. Work handed to a subagent should use the `forgetful` command line through Bash, which a separate CLI setup skill describes.
2 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit ff45893. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:
mcp__forgetful__discover_forgetful_toolsmcp__forgetful__how_to_use_forgetful_toolmcp__forgetful__execute_forgetful_toolFrom allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
claudeuvxFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use uvx, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Forgetful MCP Client Setup loads about 682 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 71 tokens; SKILL.md has 275 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from ScottRBK/forgetful at commit ff45893, republished under its MIT licence (© ScottRBK). 275 words, ~682 tokens.
.claude/skills/forgetful-mcp-setup/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder).Every MCP client sees the same three tools fronting the full registry:
discover_forgetful_tools (what exists, by category), how_to_use_forgetful_tool (one
tool's docs and schema), execute_forgetful_tool (invoke by name with a JSON arguments
object). Roughly 500 tokens of surface, with everything else disclosed at runtime.
uvx forgetful-ai
(equivalently forgetful serve --transport stdio). Right for a personal, local setup.<server>/mcp, e.g.
http://localhost:8020/mcp. Right for a shared or deployed instance.Claude Code, as the worked example:
claude mcp add forgetful -- uvx forgetful-ai # stdio
claude mcp add --transport http forgetful http://localhost:8020/mcp # HTTPOther clients follow the same two shapes (spawn command, or HTTP endpoint) in their own
config format — full per-client walkthroughs live in docs/connectivity_guide.md in the
Forgetful repo.
A local server defaults to no-auth single-user mode — connect and go. Deployed servers use
bearer tokens or OAuth (the server's configured provider). FORGETFUL_SCOPES on the server
side sets a capability ceiling (e.g. read-only) that both MCP and CLI honour; a client that
should only recall can be scoped so writes are refused.
Behavioural, not configurational:
discover_forgetful_tools returns categories, and they match the server's enabled
feature flags (skills/files/plans appear only when enabled).execute_forgetful_tool round-trip returns real data — get_current_user or
list_projects both work as smoke calls.Done when: both pass in the client that was just wired, in a fresh session.
Run Forgetful MCP calls in the main conversation — subagents do not inherit MCP tool
access. When work must be delegated to a subagent, give it the CLI surface instead
(Bash with the forgetful command travels into subagents; see forgetful-cli-setup).

breaking-brake/cc-wf-studio
Creates and edits visual agent workflows in CC Workflow Studio through conversation, with the agent reading and writing the canvas over MCP.
ScottRBK/forgetful
Installs and connects the Forgetful CLI in local or remote mode, sets up token auth for CI, and proves the setup with a real round-trip call.
ScottRBK/forgetful

Forgetful MCP Client Setup fits situations like: wiring Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini or Copilot to a Forgetful server; deciding between a local stdio setup and a shared HTTP deployment; limiting a client to read-only recall with server-side scopes; confirming a newly configured client really returns data in a fresh session.

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Forgetful MCP Client Setup needs the command-line tools its instructions call (claude and uvx). Our summary lists: `uvx` to run `forgetful-ai` for stdio; A running Forgetful server for HTTP transport. Its frontmatter pre-approves these tools: mcp__forgetful__discover_forgetful_tools, mcp__forgetful__how_to_use_forgetful_tool, mcp__forgetful__execute_forgetful_tool.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use uvx, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Forgetful MCP Client Setup is published under the MIT licence (declared in SKILL.md). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 682 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2.7k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
