forgetful-cli-setupInstalls and connects the Forgetful CLI in local or remote mode, sets up token auth for CI, and proves the setup with a real round-trip call.
The skill ends with a verified round-trip, not just an installed binary. Installation uses uvx forgetful-ai --version for a one-off run or pip install forgetful-ai, or uv tool install. Local mode, the default, runs in-process against the locally configured database with no server. Remote mode drives a deployed server, either through browser OAuth with forgetful auth login --server or, for headless and CI use, through the FORGETFUL_SERVER and FORGETFUL_TOKEN environment variables.
Setup counts as done when forgetful tools list and forgetful project list --json both succeed against the intended target. For scripts and agents the skill describes a machine contract: pass --json on data commands, expect errors as JSON on stderr, and rely on exit codes 0 for success, 1 for a tool or runtime error and 2 for a usage error. A discovery ladder moves from curated verbs such as memory search, save, get and recent to tools list, tools info and call with JSON arguments. It also shows running a local server with forgetful serve over http or stdio.
4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 7afcbf1. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:
Bash(forgetful:*)From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
uvxpipFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use uvx and pip, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:
FORGETFUL_TOKENFrom names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Forgetful CLI Setup loads about 898 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 97 tokens; SKILL.md has 355 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.
rges shell env over `~/.config/forgetful/.env`. Check state anytime withAutomated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from ScottRBK/forgetful at commit 7afcbf1, republished under its MIT licence (© ScottRBK). 355 words, ~898 tokens.

uvx forgetful-ai --version # ephemeral, no install
pip install forgetful-ai # or: uv tool install forgetful-aiBoth forgetful and forgetful-ai invoke the same CLI.
Connection precedence: --local > --server URL > FORGETFUL_SERVER env > local default.
forgetful auth login --server <url> (browser OAuth; tokens cached under ~/.config/forgetful/, server written to the
user config). Headless/CI use: set FORGETFUL_SERVER and FORGETFUL_TOKEN (bearer) in
the environment — no browser involved.Config merges shell env over ~/.config/forgetful/.env. Check state anytime with
forgetful auth status.
forgetful tools list # registry categories come back
forgetful project list --json # one real call round-tripsDone when: both succeed against the intended target (local or the remote URL).
For scripts and agents, pass --json on data commands — tools, call, memory, and
project verbs: results are machine JSON, errors arrive as {"error": ...} on stderr. auth
subcommands are human-oriented and don't take --json. Exit codes are contractual — 0
success, 1 tool or runtime error, 2 usage error. Parse output, branch on exit code.

(forgetful-remember, forgetful-recall, ...) — the ladder is how the CLI reaches the
same operations.

MemPalace/mempalace
Installs and configures MemPalace as a private local palace, a shared-brain hub or a client of an existing hub, including MCP registration and version-correct initialization.
rohitg00/agentmemory
Sets up and troubleshoots a local agentmemory install, covering the MCP connection, environment variables, ports, authentication and optional feature flags.
breferrari/obsidian-mind
Search the vault using QMD semantic search. An agent skill from breferrari/obsidian-mind.
MemoriLabs/Memori
Teaches an MCP-connected agent when and how to call Memori's recall, summary, compaction, augmentation, feedback and quota tools to keep context across sessions.
mozilla-ai/cq
Queries a shared knowledge store before acting, proposes newly discovered insights, and confirms or flags existing entries, so agents stop rediscovering the same failures.
Goldentrii/AgentRecall-X
Persistent compounding memory for AI agents. An agent skill from Goldentrii/AgentRecall-X.
ScottRBK/forgetful
Decides where a piece of knowledge belongs in the Forgetful memory server, checks for existing entries first, then creates and links it without deleting anything.
ScottRBK/forgetful
Encodes a repository into the Forgetful knowledge base as a project, entities, atomic memories and documents, so a second run updates instead of duplicating.
ScottRBK/forgetful
Models people, organisations, devices, products and system components as entities in a Forgetful knowledge graph, then links memories and relationships to them.
ScottRBK/forgetful
Explores the Forgetful memory graph in phases, walking memories, entities and relationships to answer cross-project and entity-centred questions.
ScottRBK/forgetful
Stores screenshots, PDFs, diagrams, fonts and other binary files in the Forgetful knowledge base, with a retrieval-friendly description and an attachment route.
ScottRBK/forgetful
Connects an MCP client to the Forgetful memory server over stdio or HTTP, then confirms the link works with discovery and round-trip calls.

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Forgetful CLI Setup needs the command-line tools its instructions call (uvx and pip) and credentials named FORGETFUL_TOKEN. Our summary lists: Python with pip, or uv, to install forgetful-ai; A Forgetful server URL and token for remote mode. Its frontmatter pre-approves these tools: Bash(forgetful:*).
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use uvx and pip, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found notes only (mentions a .env file), nothing it rates as a warning. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Forgetful CLI Setup is published under the MIT licence (declared in SKILL.md). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 898 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.6k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
