What it does

Openspeccer is an agent skill from sammcj/agentic-coding. Use when the user wants to open or browse an OpenSpec project's dashboard, or asks which OpenSpec changes are in flight or how far along one is. Do NOT use for creating, editing, verifying or archiving changes; use the OpenSpec workflow skills for those.

Its SKILL.md is about 530 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 53 other files, including scripts and assets (for example `assets/web/app.js`, `assets/web/export.js` and `assets/web/lib.js`).

The repository describes itself as: Agentic Coding Rules, Templates etc... The licence is Apache-2.0.

When your agent uses it

  • The user wants to open
  • Browse an OpenSpec projects dashboard
  • Asks which OpenSpec changes are in flight
  • How far along one is

Example prompts

  • “/openspeccer”

Requirements

  • Python 3
  • Node.js

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Create a task per step below, each with its completion criterion, then work through them.
  2. Find the repo: pass the user's repo path, or omit it and the script searches upward from the current directory for openspec/.
  3. For a status question ("what's in flight?"), run serve.py --summary and answer from its output. For one change's artifacts and tasks, use…
  4. If the user wants the dashboard, start serve.py as a background process. Done when a line containing serving at appears, or the process…
  5. Always give the user the URL. Pass --no-open in headless or remote sessions, and when re-running against a server that is already up.
  6. To stop it, end the background process you started, using the PID or task handle you captured at launch.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 2f25ced. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 1 file in scripts/ (JavaScript, from the files we listed), which the agent can run.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Openspeccer loads about 530 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 67 tokens; SKILL.md has 293 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~67
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~530

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

openspeccer is a read-only local web dashboard for any repository holding an openspec/ directory. It is stdlib Python and needs no install. Run <this-skill-dir>/scripts/serve.py --help for every option.

Workflow

  1. Create a task per step below, each with its completion criterion, then work through them.
  2. Find the repo: pass the user's repo path, or omit it and the script searches upward from the current directory for openspec/.
  3. For a status question ("what's in flight?"), run serve.py <repo> --summary and answer from its output. For one change's artifacts and tasks, use --change <slug>. --json prints the whole snapshot; send it to a file and read only what you need. Done once you have answered, with no server started.
  4. If the user wants the dashboard, start serve.py <repo> as a background process. Done when a line containing serving <name> at <url> appears, or the process exits; on exit, report its stderr to the user.
  5. Always give the user the URL. Pass --no-open in headless or remote sessions, and when re-running against a server that is already up.
  6. To stop it, end the background process you started, using the PID or task handle you captured at launch.

Gotchas

  • Re-running for the same repo reuses the running server and prints already serving, so step 4 is safe to repeat.
  • A server you did not start (no handle from this session) belongs to the user. Leave it running.
  • The OpenSpec CLI is optional and only feeds the Schemas and Commands pages. Without it, only project schemas show and Commands is empty. For a CLI outside PATH, set OPENSPECCER_OPENSPEC_BIN.
  • Active changes from every git worktree are aggregated by default.
  • The page updates as files change, so there is nothing to refresh after editing artifacts.

How do I install Openspeccer in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add sammcj/agentic-coding --skill openspeccer -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (Skills/openspeccer in sammcj/agentic-coding) into .claude/skills/openspeccer in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Openspeccer in Codex?

Run `npx skills add sammcj/agentic-coding --skill openspeccer -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (Skills/openspeccer in sammcj/agentic-coding) into .agents/skills/openspeccer in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Openspeccer in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add sammcj/agentic-coding --skill openspeccer -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/openspeccer, .gemini/skills/openspeccer, .github/skills/openspeccer and .opencode/skills/openspeccer in your project.

What does Openspeccer need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Openspeccer needs JavaScript for the scripts in its folder. Our summary lists: Python 3; Node.js.

Does Openspeccer access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Openspeccer safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.

What licence does Openspeccer use?

Openspeccer is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Openspeccer use?

About 530 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2.1k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Openspeccer?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Openspeccer: Openspec Verify Change (Fission-AI/OpenSpec, 71k stars), OpenSpec Guided Onboarding (Fission-AI/OpenSpec, 71k stars), Browse (yc-software/qm, 15k stars) and OpenSpec Bulk Change Archiver (Fission-AI/OpenSpec, 71k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.

Who maintains Openspeccer?

sammcj (a GitHub user) maintains it in sammcj/agentic-coding, which has 162 GitHub stars. The repository holds 64 skills in this directory. The repository was last updated on October 9, 2026.
