What it does

Cost Ledger is an agent skill from ruvnet/ruflo. One cost view across Claude Code, Codex and Grok on this machine — spend, tokens, cache hit ratio per provider and model, with unpriced models flagged. Use when asked "what did I spend", "how much did Codex cost", or to compare providers. Local logs only, nothing is sent.

Its SKILL.md is about 500 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

The repository describes itself as: 🌊 The original agent harness. Deploy intelligent multi-player swarms, coordinate autonomous workflows, and build conversational AI systems. Features adaptive memory…. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Asked what did I spend
  • How much did Codex cost
  • Compare providers

Example prompts

  • “what did I spend”
  • “how much did Codex cost”
  • “/cost-ledger”

Requirements

  • Pre-approved tools (allowed-tools): Bash

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 58e0ae7. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:

    • Bash

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • node

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Cost Ledger loads about 495 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 71 tokens; SKILL.md has 194 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~71
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~495

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check: notes

The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.

  • NotePre-approves every shell command (allowed-tools: Bash)SKILL.md
    allowed-tools: Bash

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Cost Ledger

Reads the logs the agents already wrote (~/.claude/projects, $CODEX_HOME or ~/.codex) and prices them from data/prices.json (dated, editable).

Run

bash
node ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/scripts/ledger.mjs --since 7d
node ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/scripts/ledger.mjs --provider codex --format json

One mission, or one project

--from and --to (ISO times) cut the window and --project <absolute path> keeps one project's rows; the console's mission page uses them for a mission's spend. An explicit --from/--to replaces the default 7-day look-back.

Read the result correctly

  • USD and Codex credits are never added. GPT-6 Codex models are priced in credits; their cached-input rate is unpublished, so the figure is an upper bound.
  • Estimates at list price, not bills. Subscriptions bill by window, not by token. /usage is authoritative for the live Claude session; the Console or provider dashboard is authoritative for invoices.
  • Unpriced models are listed, never counted as $0. Say so, and offer to add them to data/prices.json.
  • Counting rules (why numbers differ from naive sums): Claude messages are de-duplicated by message.id + requestId; Codex uses deltas of the running total_token_usage (never also last_token_usage), cached input is a subset of input, and forked rollouts are de-duplicated.
  • Claude transcript output tokens can under-count streamed output.

If the log directory is missing, say so; do not invent numbers.

Questions about Cost Ledger

What does Cost Ledger do?

One cost view across Claude Code, Codex and Grok on this machine — spend, tokens, cache hit ratio per provider and model, with unpriced models flagged. Cost Ledger is an agent skill from ruvnet/ruflo. One cost view across Claude Code, Codex and Grok on this machine — spend, tokens, cache hit ratio per provider and model, with unpriced models flagged.

When should I use Cost Ledger?

Cost Ledger fits situations like: asked what did I spend; how much did Codex cost; compare providers.

How do I install Cost Ledger in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add ruvnet/ruflo --skill cost-ledger -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (plugins/ruflo-cost-tracker/skills/cost-ledger in ruvnet/ruflo) into .claude/skills/cost-ledger in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Cost Ledger in Codex?

Run `npx skills add ruvnet/ruflo --skill cost-ledger -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (plugins/ruflo-cost-tracker/skills/cost-ledger in ruvnet/ruflo) into .agents/skills/cost-ledger in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Cost Ledger in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add ruvnet/ruflo --skill cost-ledger -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/cost-ledger, .gemini/skills/cost-ledger, .github/skills/cost-ledger and .opencode/skills/cost-ledger in your project.

What does Cost Ledger need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Cost Ledger needs the command-line tools its instructions call (node). Its frontmatter pre-approves these tools: Bash.

Does Cost Ledger access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Cost Ledger safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found notes only (pre-approves every shell command (allowed-tools: bash)), nothing it rates as a warning. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Cost Ledger use?

Cost Ledger is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Cost Ledger use?

About 495 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Cost Ledger?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Cost Ledger: Cost Tracking (affaan-m/ECC, 276k stars), Cost Tracking (affaan-m/ECC, 276k stars), Exploring LLM Costs (PostHog/posthog, 40k stars) and Analyze Cloud Costs (langfuse/langfuse, 36k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.

Who maintains Cost Ledger?

ruvnet (a GitHub user) maintains it in ruvnet/ruflo, which has 74,159 GitHub stars. The repository holds 264 skills in this directory. The repository was last updated on October 9, 2026.
