news-idea-briefingClusters the latest news-feed results by topic and writes a briefing of research idea seeds with citations, plus a structured seeds file, without crawling new sources.
The skill takes news results the feed has already collected and turns them into grounded research ideas. A Python helper, cluster_and_seed.py, reads every news-results JSON file in the news data directory, normalizes scores across sources, removes duplicates by canonical ID (an arXiv ID, then a repo URL, then a title hash) and groups items into preliminary buckets by matched domain and top keyword. If a research_brief.json exists in the project, its title, survey scope, research questions and data source bias which clusters come first.
The agent then refines the buckets by splitting or merging them, names each theme in a few words, picks representative items, preferring cross-source sets such as a paper, a model and a repository on one topic, and writes a short what's-new note citing items by canonical ID. Output is two files in a dated folder under Ideation/proactive: idea_briefing.md and seeds.json, whose schema is in a contract reference. A grounding-rules reference is also included.
6 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit d51b64e. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:
ReadWriteBashGlobGrepFrom allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Ships 1 file in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
pythonFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
News to Research Idea Briefing loads about 1.3k tokens when it runs, and up to ~3.6k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 79 tokens; SKILL.md has 615 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.
allowed-tools: Read, Write, Bash, Glob, GrepAutomated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.
Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 615 words (~1,348 tokens).

News to Research Idea Briefing fits situations like: turning a day's news feed into a short list of research ideas; grouping papers, models and repositories on the same topic into themes; producing idea seeds that cite specific items from the feed; running as the briefing step of a proactive research scout.
Run `npx skills add OpenLAIR/dr-claw --skill news-idea-briefing -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/news-idea-briefing in OpenLAIR/dr-claw) into .claude/skills/news-idea-briefing in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add OpenLAIR/dr-claw --skill news-idea-briefing -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/news-idea-briefing in OpenLAIR/dr-claw) into .agents/skills/news-idea-briefing in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add OpenLAIR/dr-claw --skill news-idea-briefing -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/news-idea-briefing, .gemini/skills/news-idea-briefing, .github/skills/news-idea-briefing and .opencode/skills/news-idea-briefing in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, News to Research Idea Briefing needs Python for the scripts in its folder and the command-line tools its instructions call (python). Our summary lists: Python to run the clustering helper; News feed result files in the news data directory. Its frontmatter pre-approves these tools: Read, Write, Bash, Glob, Grep.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found notes only (pre-approves every shell command (allowed-tools: bash)), nothing it rates as a warning. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.
News to Research Idea Briefing has a licence file (the repository's licence) that doesn't match a standard licence. Read it on GitHub before reusing the skill.
About 1.3k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 5.4k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 2.2k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.
