What it does

Resource Optimization Lowend is an agent skill from mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills. Resource optimization skill for constrained embedded targets. Use when reducing flash/RAM usage, analyzing stack depth, reading linker map files, or tuning size vs speed on MCUs. Activates on queries about firmware size optimization, linker map, stack usage, -Os, flash RAM budget, or bloat analysis.

Its SKILL.md is about 820 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Development. It works with Rust. The repository describes itself as: A curated suite of AI agent skills for systems and low-level programming with C/C++, Rust, and Zig toolchains, covering compilers, debuggers, profilers, build systems…. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Reducing flash/RAM usage
  • Analyzing stack depth
  • Reading linker map files
  • Tuning size vs speed on MCUs

Example prompts

  • “/resource-optimization-lowend”

Workflow steps

7 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Size measurement toolchain
  2. Linker map file
  3. Compiler flags
  4. Stack analysis
  5. RAM categories
  6. Size vs speed decision
  7. Agent usage

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit bdc5847. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are bash, ld and makefile).

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Resource Optimization Lowend loads about 821 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 82 tokens; SKILL.md has 231 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~82
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~821

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Resource Optimization (Low-End Systems)

Purpose

Guide agents through flash and RAM optimization on constrained devices: compiler size flags, linker map analysis, stack usage measurement, dead code elimination, and size-vs-speed tradeoffs — for bare-metal and small RTOS images.

When to Use

  • Firmware exceeds flash budget
  • Stack overflow in production only
  • Choosing -Os vs -O2 on MCU
  • Finding unexpected .rodata or .bss growth

Workflow

1. Size measurement toolchain
bash
arm-none-eabi-size -A firmware.elf
arm-none-eabi-objdump -h firmware.elf
nm --size-sort -S firmware.elf | tail -20
2. Linker map file
ld
/* linker.ld */
OUTPUT_FORMAT("elf32-littlearm")
ENTRY(Reset_Handler)

SECTIONS
{
  /* ... */
}

/* Generate map */
/* gcc ... -Wl,-Map=firmware.map */
bash
grep -E '\.text|\.rodata|\.data|\.bss' firmware.map | head

Identify largest symbols and unexpected library pull-in.

3. Compiler flags
FlagEffect
-OsSize-first optimization
-ffunction-sections -fdata-sectionsPer-symbol sections
-Wl,--gc-sectionsDrop unused sections
-fltoCross-TU dead code elimination
-specs=nano.specsSmaller newlib (GCC ARM)
makefile
CFLAGS += -Os -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections
LDFLAGS += -Wl,--gc-sections -Wl,--print-memory-usage
4. Stack analysis
bash
# Static (if built with -fstack-usage)
find . -name '*.su' -exec cat {} \;

# Linker stack symbol
grep _estack firmware.map

Runtime: fill stack with pattern (0xDEADBEEF), run tests, scan high-water mark. FreeRTOS: uxTaskGetStackHighWaterMark.

5. RAM categories
SectionTactic
.bssShrink buffers; pool allocators
.dataMove const to flash (const → .rodata)
HeapAvoid malloc; fixed pools
StackReduce nesting; smaller ISR stacks
6. Size vs speed decision
Hot path in ISR or 1 kHz loop?
├── Yes → -O2 for that file (#pragma GCC optimize)
└── No  → -Os globally
7. Agent usage
/resource-optimization-lowend Find top 10 flash consumers in firmware.map and suggest -gc-sections fixes
