What it does

Patterns is an agent skill from MadAppGang/claude-code. Common agent patterns and templates for Claude Code. Use when implementing agents to follow proven patterns for Tasks integration, quality checks, and external model invocation via claudish CLI.

Its SKILL.md is about 1.4k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

The repository describes itself as: claude code plugins marketplace. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Implementing agents to follow proven patterns for Tasks integration
  • External model invocation via claudish CLI

Example prompts

  • “/patterns”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 6097ad4. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are xml, yaml and bash).

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Patterns loads about 1.4k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 51 tokens; SKILL.md has 83 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~51
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.4k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Agent Patterns

External Model Invocation Pattern

External AI models are invoked via Bash+claudish CLI by the orchestrator (e.g., /team). Agents do NOT need special blocks to support external models — the orchestrator calls claudish directly:

bash
# Orchestrator calls claudish directly via Bash tool
claudish --model {MODEL_ID} --stdin --quiet < prompt.md > result.md

This is 100% reliable because it's a deterministic CLI invocation, not a prompt-based delegation.

Tasks Integration Pattern

Every agent must track workflow progress.

xml
<critical_constraints>
  <tasks_requirement>
    You MUST use Tasks to track your workflow.

    **Before starting**, create task list:
    1. Phase 1 description
    2. Phase 2 description
    3. Phase 3 description

    **Update continuously**:
    - Mark "in_progress" when starting
    - Mark "completed" immediately after finishing
    - Keep only ONE task "in_progress" at a time
  </tasks_requirement>
</critical_constraints>

<workflow>
  <phase number="1" name="Phase Name">
    <step>Initialize Tasks with all phases</step>
    <step>Mark PHASE 1 as in_progress</step>
    <step>... perform work ...</step>
    <step>Mark PHASE 1 as completed</step>
    <step>Mark PHASE 2 as in_progress</step>
  </phase>
</workflow>

Quality Checks Pattern (Implementers)

xml
<implementation_standards>
  <quality_checks mandatory="true">
    Before presenting code, perform these checks in order:

    <check name="linting" order="2">
      <tool>Biome.js</tool>

      <requirement>All errors resolved</requirement>

    </check>

    <check name="type_checking" order="3">
      <tool>TypeScript</tool>
      <command>bun run typecheck</command>
      <requirement>Zero type errors</requirement>

      <requirement>All tests pass</requirement>

Review Feedback Pattern (Reviewers)

Questions about Patterns

What does Patterns do?

Common agent patterns and templates for Claude Code. An agent skill from MadAppGang/claude-code. Patterns is an agent skill from MadAppGang/claude-code. Common agent patterns and templates for Claude Code.

When should I use Patterns?

Patterns fits situations like: implementing agents to follow proven patterns for Tasks integration; external model invocation via claudish CLI.

How do I install Patterns in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add MadAppGang/claude-code --skill patterns -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (plugins/agentdev/skills/patterns in MadAppGang/claude-code) into .claude/skills/patterns in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Patterns in Codex?

Run `npx skills add MadAppGang/claude-code --skill patterns -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (plugins/agentdev/skills/patterns in MadAppGang/claude-code) into .agents/skills/patterns in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Patterns in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add MadAppGang/claude-code --skill patterns -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/patterns, .gemini/skills/patterns, .github/skills/patterns and .opencode/skills/patterns in your project.

What does Patterns need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Patterns is instructions for the agent only.

Does Patterns access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Patterns safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Patterns use?

Patterns is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Patterns use?

About 1.4k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 5.7k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Patterns?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Patterns: Commonly (Team-Commonly/commonly, 1.4k stars), Imaging Data Commons (K-Dense-AI/scientific-agent-skills, 48k stars), Documenso Common Errors (jeremylongshore/tons-of-skills-marketplace, 2.8k stars) and Obsidian Common Errors (jeremylongshore/tons-of-skills-marketplace, 2.8k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.

Who maintains Patterns?

MadAppGang (a GitHub organization) maintains it in MadAppGang/claude-code, which has 284 GitHub stars. The repository holds 69 skills in this directory. The repository was last updated on March 15, 2026.
