memoryGives the agent a long-term project memory through the Hippo CLI: load context at session start, record lessons and errors, and recall them later.
This skill puts the Hippo memory CLI into the agent's routine so lessons carry across sessions. At the start of every session the agent loads relevant context with hippo context under a token budget, and during work it records non-obvious lessons with hippo remember and a tag. Errors are stored with an error flag that doubles a memory's half-life, since memories otherwise decay unless they are retrieved.
The remaining commands cover the rest of the loop. Outcome marks recalled memories good or bad after a task, recall with the why option digs through memory when the agent is stuck, decide stores an architectural decision that stays active until superseded, and invalidate retires memories about a tool you have migrated away from. After a long coding session, hippo learn with the git option scans recent commits for lessons and for replaced tools. Memories can be exported as JSON or Markdown, and hippo status checks their health.

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

Hippo Project Memory loads about 478 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 50 tokens; SKILL.md has 150 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from kitfunso/hippo-memory at commit bfcbc29, republished under its MIT licence (© kitfunso). 150 words, ~478 tokens.
.claude/skills/memory/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder).Make your agent's memory work like a brain. Hippo is long-term memory for coding agents. Memories decay over time unless retrieved. Errors stick longer. Sleep consolidates.
Before doing any work, load relevant context:
hippo context --auto --budget 1500Read the output. These are things the project has learned from past sessions.
hippo remember "<the lesson in 1-2 sentences>" --tag <category>hippo remember "<what failed, why, and how you fixed it>" --errorThe --error flag doubles the half-life. Hard lessons don't fade quietly.
hippo outcome --goodIf the recalled memories were irrelevant:
hippo outcome --badhippo recall "<what's going wrong>" --budget 2000 --whyhippo decide "<decision>" --context "<why>"Decisions get a recall boost so they surface when relevant, and stay active until superseded.
hippo invalidate "<old tool>" --reason "migrated to <new tool>"Or let hippo learn --git detect it automatically from migration commits.
hippo learn --gitThis scans recent commits, auto-extracts lessons, and invalidates memories about replaced tools.

Hippo Project Memory fits situations like: starting a session on a project that already has notes from earlier work; after finding the cause of a confusing error; recording an architectural decision so it resurfaces when relevant; after switching libraries, so memories about the old one stop misleading.
Run `npx skills add kitfunso/hippo-memory --skill memory -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (extensions/claude-code-plugin/skills/memory in kitfunso/hippo-memory) into .claude/skills/memory in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add kitfunso/hippo-memory --skill memory -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (extensions/claude-code-plugin/skills/memory in kitfunso/hippo-memory) into .agents/skills/memory in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add kitfunso/hippo-memory --skill memory -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/memory, .gemini/skills/memory, .github/skills/memory and .opencode/skills/memory in your project.
SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Hippo Project Memory is instructions for the agent only. Our summary lists: The Hippo CLI (`hippo`) installed.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

About 478 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 1.9k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
