What it does

Golang API Server is an agent skill from HoangNguyen0403/agent-skills-standard. Build HTTP services, REST APIs, and middleware in Go. Use when building Go HTTP servers, REST APIs, or custom middleware.

Its SKILL.md is about 650 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 5 other files, including reference files (for example `evals/evals.json`, `references/graceful-shutdown.md` and `references/middleware-patterns.md`).

It sits in Backend & APIs, covering REST APIs and GraphQL. It works with Go and GraphQL. The repository describes itself as: A collection of Agent Skills Standard and Best Practice for Programming Languages, Frameworks that help our AI Agent follow best practies on frameworks and programming laguages. The licence is MIT.

Workflow steps

7 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Choose transport layer — REST (Echo/Gin/stdlib) or GraphQL (gqlgen).
  2. Thin Handlers & Resolvers — Handlers and resolvers parse/validate inputs, invoke use-case services, and map to transport models. Zero…
  3. Transport-to-Domain Mapping — Domain models remain pure; transport models adapt to domain models via dedicated mappers.
  4. Response Nullability & Slice Defaulting — Default empty slices to [] (not null) unless the schema explicitly requires null. Avoid…
  5. Add middleware — Use middleware for cross-cutting concerns (Logging, Recovery, CORS, Auth, Tracing, RequestID).
  6. Enforce pagination limits — Support first/after (GraphQL cursor) or limit/offset (REST) with strict max caps to prevent memory exhaustion.
  7. Implement graceful shutdown — Handle SIGINT/SIGTERM to drain in-flight requests.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit b529c2d. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Golang API Server loads about 652 tokens when it runs, and up to ~1.3k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 35 tokens; SKILL.md has 255 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~35
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~652
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~1.3k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Build HTTP services, REST APIs, and middleware in Go. Use when building Go HTTP servers, REST APIs, or custom middleware.

Golang API Server

Priority: P0 (CRITICAL)

Router & GraphQL Selection

  • Standard Lib (net/http): Use for simple services or zero-dependency requirements. http.ServeMux (Go 1.22+) method-based routing.
  • Echo (labstack/echo) / Gin: Recommended for production REST APIs with middleware, binding, and error handling.
  • GraphQL (99designs/gqlgen): Standard for schema-first GraphQL services. Handlers/resolvers act as thin transport adapters.

Implementation Workflow

  1. Choose transport layer — REST (Echo/Gin/stdlib) or GraphQL (gqlgen).
  2. Thin Handlers & Resolvers — Handlers and resolvers parse/validate inputs, invoke use-case services, and map to transport models. Zero direct database queries or business rules.
  3. Transport-to-Domain Mapping — Domain models remain pure; transport models adapt to domain models via dedicated mappers.
  4. Response Nullability & Slice Defaulting — Default empty slices to [] (not null) unless the schema explicitly requires null. Avoid unnecessary nullable fields in GraphQL response schemas when zero-values suffice.
  5. Add middleware — Use middleware for cross-cutting concerns (Logging, Recovery, CORS, Auth, Tracing, RequestID).
  6. Enforce pagination limits — Support first/after (GraphQL cursor) or limit/offset (REST) with strict max caps to prevent memory exhaustion.
  7. Implement graceful shutdown — Handle SIGINT/SIGTERM to drain in-flight requests.

See graceful shutdown example and Echo handler patterns

Anti-Patterns

  • No business logic in handlers or resolvers: parse request, call service, and format response only.
  • No direct DB calls in resolvers: resolvers must call service interfaces, never execute SQL queries.
  • No nil slices in responses: return empty slice [] rather than null in API responses unless distinguishing null from empty.
  • No global router/schema vars: pass router/handler dependencies explicitly via constructor.
  • No missing shutdown: handle SIGTERM to drain in-flight requests.
