What it does

Navigation 3 replaces the NavHost and NavController pattern with a state-driven model, and this skill teaches that model. Routes are Kotlin data objects or classes rather than strings, the back stack is a plain mutableStateListOf, and NavDisplay renders the current route from a lambda. A short basic-usage example starts from a remembered back stack holding the home route.

For migration it lists the key changes: swap string routes for data objects, NavHost for NavDisplay, navigate calls for direct list changes, and navArgument for data class properties, with a step-by-step migration guide in the references folder. A recipes file covers arguments, bottom navigation with multiple back stacks, deep links with and without a synthetic back stack, dialogs and bottom sheets, auth flows, returning results between screens and modularized navigation with Hilt or Koin. A checklist ends with a successful ./gradlew build, and anti-patterns rule out string routes and NavController in new projects.

When your agent uses it

  • Adding Jetpack Navigation 3 to a Compose app
  • Migrating from NavHost and NavController to NavDisplay
  • Setting up bottom navigation with multiple back stacks
  • Handling deep links, dialogs or bottom sheets in Navigation 3

Example prompts

  • “Migrate our app from NavHost and NavController to Navigation 3 using the migration guide.”
  • “Add bottom navigation with a separate back stack per tab using NavDisplay.”
  • “Set up a deep link to the product screen with a synthetic back stack.”

Requirements

  • An Android project using Jetpack Compose
  • Gradle, to verify with ./gradlew build

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Replace string routes with data objects/classes.
  2. Replace NavHost with NavDisplay.
  3. Replace NavController.navigate() with direct list manipulation.
  4. Replace navArgument with data class properties.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit b529c2d. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are kotlin).

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Android Navigation 3 Guide loads about 687 tokens when it runs, and up to ~2.5k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 61 tokens; SKILL.md has 196 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~61
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~687
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~2.5k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Install and migrate to Jetpack Navigation 3. Use when implementing Navigation 3 patterns including NavDisplay, NavKey routes, deep links, multiple backstacks, scenes (dialogs, bottom sheets), or migrating from Navigation 2.

Jetpack Navigation 3

Priority: P1 (HIGH)

Guide for implementing and migrating to Navigation 3 in Jetpack Compose.

Core concepts

Navigation 3 replaces the previous NavHost/NavController pattern with a simpler, state-driven approach:

  • Routes are Kotlin data objects/classes (not strings).
  • Back stack is a plain mutableStateListOf<Any>.
  • NavDisplay renders the current route based on a lambda.

Basic usage

kotlin
val backStack = remember { mutableStateListOf<Any>(RouteHome) }

NavDisplay(
    backStack = backStack,
    onBack = { backStack.removeLastOrNull() },
    entryProvider = { key ->
        when (key) {
            is RouteHome -> NavEntry(key) { HomeScreen(onNavigate = { backStack.add(it) }) }
            is RouteDetail -> NavEntry(key) { DetailScreen(key.id) }
            else -> error("Unknown route: $key")
        }
    }
)

Migration from Navigation 2

See migration guide for step-by-step conversion from NavHost/NavController to NavDisplay.

Key changes:

  1. Replace string routes with data objects/classes.
  2. Replace NavHost with NavDisplay.
  3. Replace NavController.navigate() with direct list manipulation.
  4. Replace navArgument with data class properties.

Common patterns

See recipes for code examples:

  • Basic navigation with arguments
  • Bottom navigation with multiple backstacks
  • Deep links (basic and with synthetic backstack)
  • Dialogs and bottom sheets
  • Conditional navigation (auth flows)
  • Returning results between screens
  • Modularized navigation with Hilt or Koin

Verification

  • Routes are data objects/classes, no string-based routing.
  • Back stack is a mutableStateListOf<Any>.
  • NavDisplay handles all routes in entryProvider.
  • ./gradlew build succeeds.

Anti-Patterns

  • No string-based routes: Use Kotlin data objects/classes for type safety.
  • No NavController for new projects: Use NavDisplay with a state list.
  • No remember { navController() }: Navigation 3 doesn't use NavController.
