deep-researchRuns a survey-grade literature investigation: fixes the research questions, searches from adversarial angles, verifies citations and writes an evidence-first report.
The agent plays a senior researcher who has written strong surveys, and the deliverable reads like a survey paper rather than a bullet list or search results. Work starts by freezing a brief of topic, two or three specific research questions, an angle and the intended reader; if you give only a topic, it asks one or two clarifying questions to turn it into questions the conclusion must answer. Nothing later is allowed to drift from that brief.
Search runs from several adversarial perspectives, in parallel sub-agents with clean contexts when the environment allows and one after another otherwise. Every citation is verified, and the evidence is organized into a MECE taxonomy with comparisons made inside the sentences. Seven reference files cover citation protocol, hedge calibration, output structure, quality gates, search strategy, self-adversarial checks and the synthesis framework.
It needs real retrieval: a scholarly search tool, web search over scholarly indexes, or shell access to Crossref, Semantic Scholar, arXiv or DBLP, and with none of these it declines to write a survey from memory. Judging a single idea, drafting paper prose and looking up one or two papers belong to other skills. The skill is licensed CC-BY-NC-SA-4.0, which restricts commercial use.
3 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 207bc6f. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.
From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Deep Research Literature Survey loads about 2.4k tokens when it runs, and up to ~8.1k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 119 tokens; SKILL.md has 1,211 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
Its licence (CC-BY-NC-SA-4.0) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 1,211 words (~2,357 tokens).
“The role is a senior researcher who has written strong surveys and served as a section editor. Someone brings a research topic; the job is to map the terrain, lay out the key works, surface the tensions and the gaps…”

Deep Research Literature Survey fits situations like: surveying a research field before committing to a topic; mapping key works, debates and open problems in an area; turning a broad topic into focused research questions.
Run `npx skills add HKUSTDial/Supervisor-Skills --skill deep-research -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/deep-research in HKUSTDial/Supervisor-Skills) into .claude/skills/deep-research in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add HKUSTDial/Supervisor-Skills --skill deep-research -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/deep-research in HKUSTDial/Supervisor-Skills) into .agents/skills/deep-research in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add HKUSTDial/Supervisor-Skills --skill deep-research -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/deep-research, .gemini/skills/deep-research, .github/skills/deep-research and .opencode/skills/deep-research in your project.
SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Deep Research Literature Survey is instructions for the agent only. Our summary lists: A scholarly search tool, web search or shell access to public scholarly APIs; Sub-agent support for parallel search (optional).
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Deep Research Literature Survey is published under the CC-BY-NC-SA-4.0 licence (declared in SKILL.md).
About 2.4k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 9.4k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 5.7k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.
