cli-anything-hermesGuides Hermes Agent through building, refining and testing a CLI-Anything harness that wraps a GUI application or source repository in a scriptable command line.
Before building anything, the agent is told to look for the full CLI-Anything methodology: reading HARNESS.md from a local cli-anything-plugin folder if one is present, cloning that folder from the HKUDS/CLI-Anything repository if it is not, and falling back to the condensed rules in this file only if both attempts fail. Input is a local source path or a GitHub repository URL, with the software's name taken from the directory after cloning. Hermes builds harnesses by combining its terminal, execute_code, delegate_task, read_file and write_file, and patch tools, following the exact invocation syntax in the Hermes Agent documentation.
Three modes are covered. Build creates a new harness under an agent-harness folder with a stateful Click CLI that supports one-shot subcommands, a REPL as the default when no subcommand is given, a JSON output mode, and session state with undo and redo where the target software allows it. Refine starts from an inventory of existing commands and tests, runs a gap analysis against the target software, and prefers high-impact missing features and easy wrappers around existing APIs, never removing a command unless a breaking change is explicitly requested. Test plans coverage before writing it, keeping a unit-test file and a separate workflow and backend end-to-end test file.
3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 34f5195. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Ships 2 files in scripts/ (PowerShell and Shell), which the agent can run.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
pipFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:
github.comFrom URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
CLI-Anything for Hermes Agent loads about 1.1k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 65 tokens; SKILL.md has 497 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.
The full file from HKUDS/CLI-Anything at commit 34f5195, republished under its Apache-2.0 licence (© HKUDS). 497 words, ~1,123 tokens.
.claude/skills/cli-anything-hermes/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder). This skill also uses 3 other files; get the full folder from GitHub.Use this skill when the user wants Hermes Agent to act like the CLI-Anything builder.
Before implementation, use the full methodology source of truth when available:
CLI-Anything repository, read ../cli-anything-plugin/HARNESS.md first.cli-anything-plugin from https://github.com/HKUDS/CLI-Anything/tree/main/cli-anything-plugin, then use HARNESS.md and the resources around it from that folder.Accept either:
./gimp or /path/to/softwareDerive the software name from the local directory name after cloning if needed.
Hermes agents build harnesses by combining these built-in tools:
| Tool | Role in Harness Workflow |
|---|---|
terminal | Run shell commands, install packages, execute CLI tools, run tests |
execute_code | Generate and write Python files (Click CLI, backend modules, tests) |
delegate_task | Parallelize analysis or generation subtasks |
read_file / write_file | Read and write harness source files |
patch | Make targeted edits to generated code |
Consult the Hermes Agent documentation for the exact tool invocation syntax.
Use when the user wants a new harness.

Do not remove existing commands unless the user explicitly asks for a breaking change.
Plan tests before writing them. Keep both:

Check that the harness:
cli_anything.<software> namespace package layoutsetup.py entry pointPrefer the real software backend over reimplementation. Wrap the actual executable or scripting interface in utils/<software>_backend.py when possible. Use synthetic reimplementation only when the project explicitly requires it or no viable native backend exists.

CLI-Anything for Hermes Agent fits situations like: wrapping a GUI application or repository in a scriptable CLI harness; adding missing commands to an existing CLI-Anything harness; planning and writing tests for a generated harness; pointing Hermes Agent at a local path or GitHub repo to automate.

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, CLI-Anything for Hermes Agent needs PowerShell and a shell for the scripts in its folder and the command-line tools its instructions call (pip). Our summary lists: Hermes Agent with its terminal, execute_code, delegate_task, read_file/write_file and patch tools; Python, for the generated Click CLI.
SKILL.md names 1 domain. In commands or code: github.com; the agent is likely to contact it when it follows the instructions. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.
CLI-Anything for Hermes Agent is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 1.1k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 4.5k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
