At a glance

Supplies venue-specific LaTeX templates and formatting rules for journals, conferences and posters, and checks a manuscript against page limits and submission requirements.

  • Works in 9 steps: Journal Article Templates → Conference Paper Templates → Research Poster Templates → …
  • Preparing a manuscript for submission to a named journal
  • SKILL.md covers Overview, When to Use This Skill, Boundary and Core Capabilities, plus 5 more sections
  • Runs Python scripts from its folder; calls python

What it does

The skill covers the formatting side of academic submission. It holds LaTeX templates and guidelines for more than 50 journals, including Nature, Science, PLOS, Cell Press, IEEE and ACM titles, and for conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML and CHI, plus a Beamer poster template. Shipped assets include nature_article.tex, neurips_article.tex, plos_one.tex and beamerposter_academic.tex, and reference files cover conferences, grants, journals and posters.

Three Python scripts do the work: query_template.py to find a template, customize_template.py to fill in author and project details, and validate_format.py to verify compliance. Its boundary is narrow: it does not produce figures, write manuscript prose, manage bibliographies, prepare rebuttals or draft grants. It is meant for page limits, anonymity rules and camera-ready formatting.

When your agent uses it

  • Preparing a manuscript for submission to a named journal
  • Formatting a conference paper to the venue's style file and page limit
  • Making a research poster from a Beamer template
  • Checking anonymity and camera-ready requirements before submitting

Example prompts

  • “Set up my paper in the NeurIPS template and check it against the page limit.”
  • “Give me the Nature article template filled in with our author list.”
  • “Verify that my PLOS ONE manuscript follows the journal's formatting rules.”

Requirements

  • A LaTeX distribution to compile the templates
  • Python for the bundled scripts
  • Pre-approved tools (allowed-tools): Read, Write, Edit, Bash

Workflow steps

9 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit ddcaa2a. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:

    • Read
    • Write
    • Edit
    • Bash

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 3 files in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • python

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Links to these hosts (documentation or services it may open):

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Academic Venue Templates loads about 3.9k tokens when it runs, and up to ~23k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 62 tokens; SKILL.md has 1,224 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~62
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~3.9k
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~23k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check: notes

The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.

  • NotePre-approves every shell command (allowed-tools: Bash)SKILL.md

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

  --affiliations "University Name" \
  --output my_nature_paper.tex

Option 2: Manual Editing:

  • Open template file
  • Replace placeholder text (marked with comments)
  • Fill in title, authors, affiliations, abstract
  • Add your content to each section
Step 5: Validate Format

Check compliance with venue requirements:

bash
python scripts/validate_format.py \
  --file my_paper.pdf \
  --venue "Nature" \
  --check-all

Validation Checks:

  • Page count within limits
  • Font sizes correct
  • Margins meet specifications

Questions about Academic Venue Templates

What does Academic Venue Templates do?

Supplies venue-specific LaTeX templates and formatting rules for journals, conferences and posters, and checks a manuscript against page limits and submission requirements.

When should I use Academic Venue Templates?

Academic Venue Templates fits situations like: preparing a manuscript for submission to a named journal; formatting a conference paper to the venue's style file and page limit; making a research poster from a Beamer template; checking anonymity and camera-ready requirements before submitting.

How do I install Academic Venue Templates in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add foryourhealth111-pixel/Vibe-Skills --skill venue-templates -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (bundled/skills/venue-templates in foryourhealth111-pixel/Vibe-Skills) into .claude/skills/venue-templates in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Academic Venue Templates in Codex?

Run `npx skills add foryourhealth111-pixel/Vibe-Skills --skill venue-templates -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (bundled/skills/venue-templates in foryourhealth111-pixel/Vibe-Skills) into .agents/skills/venue-templates in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Academic Venue Templates in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add foryourhealth111-pixel/Vibe-Skills --skill venue-templates -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/venue-templates, .gemini/skills/venue-templates, .github/skills/venue-templates and .opencode/skills/venue-templates in your project.

What does Academic Venue Templates need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Academic Venue Templates needs Python for the scripts in its folder and the command-line tools its instructions call (python). Our summary lists: A LaTeX distribution to compile the templates; Python for the bundled scripts. Its frontmatter pre-approves these tools: Read, Write, Edit, Bash.

Does Academic Venue Templates access the network?

SKILL.md names 10 domains. As links in the text: nature.com, science.org, plos.org, cell.com, neurips.cc, icml.cc, cvpr.thecvf.com, nsf.gov, grants.nih.gov and science.osti.gov. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Academic Venue Templates safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found notes only (pre-approves every shell command (allowed-tools: bash)), nothing it rates as a warning. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.

What licence does Academic Venue Templates use?
