At a glance

Reads keys and server state from Redis instances configured in .env through a read-only Python client, choosing connections by label or index.

  • Works in 4 steps: accounts to confirm the label. → dbsize or info memory for a quick… → keys '' to find what you're looking for… → …
  • Checking what a cache key currently holds
  • SKILL.md covers Setup — one-time, per instance, Usage, Output shape and Guardrails, plus 4 more sections
  • Runs Python scripts from its folder; calls python3 and uv; needs DB_REDIS_1_PASSWORD

What it does

Connections are declared in .env as numbered blocks with a required label, plus host, port and credentials, or a single URL that takes priority. The bundled db_client.py then offers commands to list connections, ping a server and report round-trip time, list keys by pattern, read one key, show server info and count keys. Output is JSON on stdout and errors go to stderr.

It is deliberately read-only: no SET, DEL or FLUSH commands are exposed. Key listing uses SCAN instead of KEYS so production servers are not blocked, and results are capped at MAX_ROWS. Reading a key detects its type among string, list, set, hash, zset and stream and includes the TTL. Values are decoded as UTF-8, so raw binary is not supported.

When your agent uses it

  • Checking what a cache key currently holds
  • Listing keys that match a pattern on a Redis server
  • Checking server info or database size without changing any data
  • Health-checking a Redis connection by label, such as cache-dev

Example prompts

  • “Show me the value and TTL of user:123 on cache-dev.”
  • “List the keys that start with session: on queue-prod.”
  • “Ping every configured Redis connection and report the round-trip times.”
  • “How many keys are in the cache-dev database?”

Requirements

  • Python 3
  • A Redis block in .env with a DB_REDIS label and connection settings

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. accounts to confirm the label.
  2. dbsize or info memory for a quick overview before listing.
  3. keys '' to find what you're looking for — always use a narrow pattern on prod instances.
  4. get to read individual values. TTL is included so you know if the value is ephemeral.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 7f5dd76. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 1 file in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • python3
    • uv

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Links to these hosts (documentation or services it may open):

    • redis.io

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • DB_REDIS_1_PASSWORD

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Redis Inspector loads about 1.3k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 77 tokens; SKILL.md has 334 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~77
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.3k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 334 words (~1,268 tokens).

Questions about Redis Inspector

What does Redis Inspector do?

Reads keys and server state from Redis instances configured in .env through a read-only Python client, choosing connections by label or index. env as numbered blocks with a required label, plus host, port and credentials, or a single URL that takes priority.py then offers commands to list connections, ping a server and report round-trip time, list keys by pattern, read one key, show server info and count keys.

When should I use Redis Inspector?

Redis Inspector fits situations like: checking what a cache key currently holds; listing keys that match a pattern on a Redis server; checking server info or database size without changing any data; health-checking a Redis connection by label, such as cache-dev.

How do I install Redis Inspector in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add evolution-foundation/evo-nexus --skill db-redis -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.claude/skills/db-redis in evolution-foundation/evo-nexus) into .claude/skills/db-redis in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Redis Inspector in Codex?

Run `npx skills add evolution-foundation/evo-nexus --skill db-redis -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (.claude/skills/db-redis in evolution-foundation/evo-nexus) into .agents/skills/db-redis in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Redis Inspector in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add evolution-foundation/evo-nexus --skill db-redis -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/db-redis, .gemini/skills/db-redis, .github/skills/db-redis and .opencode/skills/db-redis in your project.

What does Redis Inspector need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Redis Inspector needs Python for the scripts in its folder, the command-line tools its instructions call (python3 and uv) and credentials named DB_REDIS_1_PASSWORD. Our summary lists: Python 3; A Redis block in .env with a DB_REDIS label and connection settings.

Does Redis Inspector access the network?

SKILL.md names 1 domain. As links in the text: redis.io. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Redis Inspector safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found notes only (mentions a .env file), nothing it rates as a warning. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.

What licence does Redis Inspector use?

Redis Inspector has a licence file (the repository's licence) that doesn't match a standard licence. Read it on GitHub before reusing the skill.

How many tokens does Redis Inspector use?

About 1.3k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 5.1k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Redis Inspector?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Redis Inspector: Redis Connections (redis/agent-skills, 165 stars), Azure Resource Manager Redis Dotnet (microsoft/skills, 3.1k stars), AWS Cloudformation Elasticache (giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit, 355 stars) and Python Redis Module Skill (jiushiwon/wg-skills, 110 stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.

Who maintains Redis Inspector?

evolution-foundation (a GitHub organization) maintains it in evolution-foundation/evo-nexus, which has 544 GitHub stars. The repository holds 117 skills in this directory. The repository was last updated on May 13, 2026.
