At a glance

Supplies LaTeX templates and formatting rules for journals, conferences, posters, and grant proposals, then can check a draft against them.

  • Works in 10 steps: Journal Article Templates → Conference Paper Templates → Research Poster Templates → …
  • Preparing a manuscript for a specific journal's submission requirements
  • SKILL.md covers Overview, When to Use This Skill, Visual Enhancement with… and Core Capabilities, plus 5 more sections
  • Runs Python scripts from its folder; calls python

What it does

This skill bundles ready LaTeX templates for scientific journals, conference papers, academic posters, and grant proposals for agencies including NSF, NIH, DOE, and DARPA, along with reference files describing each venue's formatting and submission requirements.

Beyond the templates, bundled scripts can fill one in with author and project details, look up the rules for a specific venue, and check a finished document's compliance with that venue's page limits and formatting. It also suggests adding a generated scientific schematic to any new document to show methodology or architecture, using a separate diagram skill that produces and refines the image from a written description.

When your agent uses it

  • Preparing a manuscript for a specific journal's submission requirements
  • Writing a conference paper or poster with venue-specific formatting
  • Checking a grant proposal's page limits against an agency's rules

Example prompts

  • “Set up this manuscript using the Nature article template.”
  • “Fill in the NSF proposal template with our project's details.”
  • “Check this conference submission's formatting against the page limit.”

Requirements

  • Python with a LaTeX toolchain for building and checking documents
  • Pre-approved tools (allowed-tools): Read, Write, Edit, Bash

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 79182c5. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:

    • Read
    • Write
    • Edit
    • Bash

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 3 files in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • python

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Links to these hosts (documentation or services it may open):

    • nature.com
    • science.org
    • plos.org
    • cell.com
    • neurips.cc
    • icml.cc
    • cvpr.thecvf.com
    • nsf.gov
    • grants.nih.gov
    • science.osti.gov

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Scientific Venue Templates loads about 5.1k tokens when it runs, and up to ~24k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 122 tokens; SKILL.md has 1,646 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~122
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~5.1k
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~24k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check: notes

The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.

  • NotePre-approves every shell command (allowed-tools: Bash)SKILL.md
    allowed-tools: Read, Write, Edit, Bash

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

Venue Templates

Overview

Access comprehensive LaTeX templates, formatting requirements, and submission guidelines for major scientific publication venues, academic conferences, research posters, and grant proposals. This skill provides ready-to-use templates and detailed specifications for successful academic submissions across disciplines.

Use this skill when preparing manuscripts for journal submission, conference papers, research posters, or grant proposals and need venue-specific formatting requirements and templates.

When to Use This Skill

This skill should be used when:

  • Preparing a manuscript for submission to a specific journal (Nature, Science, PLOS, IEEE, etc.)
  • Writing a conference paper with specific formatting requirements (NeurIPS, ICML, CHI, etc.)
  • Creating an academic research poster for conferences
  • Drafting grant proposals for federal agencies (NSF, NIH, DOE, DARPA) or private foundations
  • Checking formatting requirements and page limits for target venues
  • Customizing templates with author information and project details
  • Verifying document compliance with venue specifications

Visual Enhancement with Scientific Schematics

When creating documents with this skill, always consider adding scientific diagrams and schematics to enhance visual communication.

If your document does not already contain schematics or diagrams:

  • Use the scientific-schematics skill to generate AI-powered publication-quality diagrams
  • Simply describe your desired diagram in natural language
  • Nano Banana Pro will automatically generate, review, and refine the schematic

For new documents: Scientific schematics should be generated by default to visually represent key concepts, workflows, architectures, or relationships described in the text.

How to generate schematics:

bash
python scripts/generate_schematic.py "your diagram description" -o figures/output.png

The AI will automatically:

  • Create publication-quality images with proper formatting
  • Review and refine through multiple iterations
  • Ensure accessibility (colorblind-friendly, high contrast)
  • Save outputs in the figures/ directory

When to add schematics:

  • Methodology flowcharts for papers
  • Conceptual framework diagrams
  • System architecture illustrations
  • Data flow diagrams
  • Experimental design visualizations
  • Research workflow diagrams
  • Any complex concept that benefits from visualization

For detailed guidance on creating schematics, refer to the scientific-schematics skill documentation.
