At a glance

Compression codecs, TTL policies, tiered storage, part management, and disk space optimization.

  • SKILL.md covers Compression Codecs, TTL Policies, Tiered Storage and Part Management, plus 1 more section
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

Storage Optimization is an agent skill from chmonitor/chmonitor. Compression codecs, TTL policies, tiered storage, part management, and disk space optimization.

Its SKILL.md is about 490 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

The repository describes itself as: Open-source operational advisor for ClickHouse — real-time monitoring plus AI-driven index/partition/materialized-view recommendations. The licence is GPL-3.0.

Example prompts

  • “/storage-optimization”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit fc39ef0. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Storage Optimization loads about 492 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 29 tokens; SKILL.md has 236 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~29
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Storage Optimization

Compression Codecs

  • Default: LZ4 — fast, moderate compression
  • ZSTD(level) — better compression, slower. Level 1-22 (3 is good default)
  • Delta + ZSTD — excellent for time-series monotonic data
  • DoubleDelta — best for timestamps and counters
  • Gorilla — optimized for floating-point gauge metrics
  • T64 — for integer columns with small range
  • Per-column: ALTER TABLE t MODIFY COLUMN col TYPE UInt32 CODEC(Delta, ZSTD(3))
  • In-place codec change: ALTER TABLE t MODIFY COLUMN col CODEC(Delta, ZSTD(3))

TTL Policies

  • Table-level: ALTER TABLE t MODIFY TTL event_time + INTERVAL 90 DAY
  • Column-level: ALTER TABLE t MODIFY COLUMN old_col TTL event_time + INTERVAL 30 DAY
  • Move to volume: TTL event_time + INTERVAL 7 DAY TO VOLUME 'cold'
  • Delete: TTL event_time + INTERVAL 365 DAY DELETE
  • Monitor TTL merges: system.merges WHERE is_ttl_merge = 1

Tiered Storage

  • Define storage policies in config: hot (SSD) → warm (HDD) → cold (S3)
  • <storage_configuration> in config.xml
  • Move rules: TTL event_time + INTERVAL 7 DAY TO DISK 'hdd'
  • Check disk usage: system.disks
  • Check volume usage: system.storage_policies

Part Management

  • Monitor part count: SELECT count() FROM system.parts WHERE active AND database = 'db' AND table = 't'
  • Too many parts (>300 per partition) = degraded performance
  • Detached parts: check system.detached_parts, clean with DROP DETACHED PART
  • Part size target: 1-10GB per part for optimal performance

Disk Space Recovery

  • DROP PARTITION for bulk deletion by time
  • TRUNCATE TABLE for full table cleanup
  • Check for orphaned data: detached parts, temporary files
  • System tables can grow large — set TTL on query_log, trace_log, etc.
  • Load the troubleshooting skill for disk-full recovery procedures.

Can I use Storage Optimization in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add chmonitor/chmonitor --skill storage-optimization -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/storage-optimization, .gemini/skills/storage-optimization, .github/skills/storage-optimization and .opencode/skills/storage-optimization in your project.

What does Storage Optimization need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Storage Optimization is instructions for the agent only.

Does Storage Optimization access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Storage Optimization safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
