What it does

Etp Writing Style is an agent skill from brycewang-stanford/Awesome-Journal-Skills. Use when the prose, abstract, or introduction of an Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice (ETP) manuscript does not land the journal's theory-and-practice voice. Polishes the writing; it does not build the contribution (etp-contribution-framing) or run the submission preflight (etp-submission).

Its SKILL.md is about 1.6k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Writing & Content, covering Brand voice and tone. The repository describes itself as: Journal-specific Claude Code/Codex skill packs covering mainstream journals — AER, QJE, Nature, Cell, 管理世界, 经济研究 & 200+ more — your fast track to getting published. | 覆盖主流期刊的… The licence is MIT.

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Hook with the entrepreneurial puzzle — a tension or surprising fact about how ventures/founders actually behave, not a textbook truism.
  2. Name the conversation and the gap — the specific debate you join (one paragraph, specific cites).
  3. State the contribution as a matched pair — what changes in theory and what it means for practice, in two or three sentences, early.
  4. Preview the mechanism and approach — the engine (opportunity/effectuation/identity/SEW) and how you study it.
  5. Roadmap — brief, only if the paper is complex.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 932eb23. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Etp Writing Style loads about 1.6k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 78 tokens; SKILL.md has 746 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~78
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Writing Style (etp-writing-style)

When to trigger

  • The introduction takes pages to reach the point; the contribution is buried
  • The abstract reads as a methods summary, not a contribution statement
  • The prose could describe any management study — the entrepreneurial phenomenon isn't vivid
  • The "implications for practice" section is flat and disconnected from the argument
  • A reviewer says the paper is "hard to follow" or "doesn't read like an entrepreneurship paper"

The ETP voice

ETP prose is theory-forward and accessible. It is more conceptual than a finance journal and more practitioner-aware than a pure-theory management outlet — the USASBE heritage means a reader expects the writing to connect to entrepreneurial reality. The hallmark is a paper that a sophisticated scholar reads for the theory and a thoughtful practitioner reads for the implication, without either feeling shortchanged. Write in APA style, in clear declarative prose, and keep the entrepreneurial phenomenon concrete (real venturing situations, not abstractions about "organizations").

Engineer the introduction (do this last)

ETP intros reward a tight, signposted opening. A reliable structure:

Write the introduction after the analysis and contribution settle; an intro drafted early almost always promises the wrong paper.

Make the abstract a contribution, not a recap

The abstract should state the puzzle, the mechanism, the key finding with a sense of magnitude, and the dual contribution (theory + practice). A common ETP abstract failure is spending most of the words on data and method while never saying what the reader should now believe. Confirm the current abstract length limit on the SAGE author-instructions page before finalizing (检索于 2026-06;以官网为准).

Keep the phenomenon and the mechanism visible

  • Use your entrepreneurial construct names consistently (effectuation, bricolage, socioemotional wealth) — don't drift into generic "strategy" or "behavior."
  • Anchor abstract claims to concrete venturing situations (a founder choosing affordable loss; a family successor weighing dynastic control), so the theory stays embodied.
  • Define each construct once, clearly, and keep terminology stable across intro, theory, and discussion.

The discussion and practice section

The discussion should (1) restate the theory contribution against the conversation, (2) draw out boundary conditions and a research agenda, and (3) deliver the practice implications as a genuine section — mechanism-derived, actor-named, honest about limits. ETP discussions that end on a perfunctory "managers should pay attention" undercut an otherwise strong paper.

Checklist

  • The contribution (theory + practice) appears within the first page or two
  • The introduction hooks with a real entrepreneurial puzzle, not a truism
  • The abstract states what the reader should now believe, with a sense of magnitude
  • Entrepreneurial construct names are used consistently; defined once, stable throughout
  • Claims are anchored to concrete venturing situations
  • The practice section is mechanism-derived and actor-specific
  • APA style throughout; abstract within the current limit (待核实)

Anti-patterns

  • Buried contribution — the reader cannot find the "so what" until the discussion
  • Methods-summary abstract — all data/method, no claim
  • Generic-management voice — the entrepreneurial phenomenon never becomes concrete
  • Construct drift — terminology shifts across sections
  • Perfunctory practice close — "managers should pay attention" as the final word
  • Premature intro — an introduction written before the contribution settled

Worked vignette (illustrative)

Compare two openings for the same paper. Weak: "Entrepreneurship is important for economic growth. Prior research has studied many factors affecting venture performance. In this paper, we study the effect of founder cognition on outcomes." It is a truism, names no conversation, and hides the contribution. Strong: "Founders routinely bet a venture's survival on intuitions that, by any predictive standard, look reckless — yet some of these bets are exactly what keeps young firms alive. We show that effectual, affordable-loss reasoning extends venture survival in highly uncertain markets but not in stable ones, qualifying the effectuation–causation debate. For investors and accelerators, this means predictive business plans are not a universal quality signal: in uncertain markets, evidence of affordable-loss experimentation is the better bet." The strong version hooks with a real entrepreneurial puzzle, names the conversation, states the matched theory-and-practice contribution within the first paragraph, and keeps the phenomenon concrete — exactly the ETP voice. Note it was written after the analysis settled.
