What it does

Research Mode is an agent skill from assafkip/kipi-system. Anti-hallucination research mode. Toggle on to enforce citation requirements, source grounding, and "I don't know" behavior. Toggle off for creative work.

Its SKILL.md is about 1.8k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 4 other files, including reference files (for example `commands/q-research.md` and `references/anthropic-reduce-hallucinations.md`).

It sits in Research & Science, covering Citation management. It works with Perplexity. The repository describes itself as: Your AI brain, externalized. It remembers everything you do, then becomes whatever role you need. Same skeleton can run as your chief of staff, lawyer, PM, or investigator. Plain… The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Citation management

Example prompts

  • “t know”
  • “/research-mode”

Requirements

  • A credential in FIRECRAWL_API_KEY

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Say "I don't know"
  2. Verify with citations
  3. Direct quotes for factual grounding

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 16d4724. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • curl

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • r.jina.ai

    Also links to:

    • docs.anthropic.com
    • jina.ai

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • FIRECRAWL_API_KEY

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Research Mode loads about 1.8k tokens when it runs, and up to ~2.3k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 42 tokens; SKILL.md has 969 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~42
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.8k
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~2.3k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Research Mode

Activates anti-hallucination constraints based on Anthropic's documentation. Stay in this mode until the user says to exit.

Source: Anthropic - Reduce Hallucinations

Before starting: Read references/anthropic-reduce-hallucinations.md for the full technique set from Anthropic's documentation. The constraints below are derived from that source.

Constraints (ALL active simultaneously)

1. Say "I don't know"

If you don't have a credible source for a claim, say so. Don't guess. Don't infer. "I don't have data on this" is always a valid answer.

2. Verify with citations

Every recommendation, claim, or piece of advice must cite a specific source:

  • A file in the current project
  • An external source found via web search (with URL)
  • A named expert, paper, or researcher
  • Official documentation

If you generate a claim and cannot find a supporting source, retract it. Do not present it.

3. Direct quotes for factual grounding

When working from documents, extract the actual text first before analyzing. Ground your response in word-for-word quotes, not paraphrased summaries. Reference the quote when making your point.

Source lookup order (ENFORCED -- follow this cascade)

Check sources in this order. Stop at the first level that answers the question.

Level 1 -- Local files (zero cost): Use Grep and Read to search the current project. Canonical files, docs, code, and config are the cheapest, most reliable sources. If the claim is about this project, local files ARE the citation.

Level 2 -- Perplexity (low cost, preferred for all web research): Call mcp__perplexity__perplexity_ask with a focused question. Perplexity returns a grounded answer with inline citations in a single call. Cite the Perplexity response and its source URLs verbatim. Do NOT paraphrase without attribution.

  • Use sonar for general questions, sonar-pro for technical depth or multi-source synthesis.
  • Ask one question per call. Do not stuff multiple topics into one prompt.
  • If Perplexity returns "I don't know" or no citations, treat it as no answer. Escalate to Level 3 only if the founder explicitly asks for direct source text.

Level 3a -- Jina Reader (cheap default for page reads): When Perplexity's summary is insufficient and you need word-for-word text from a specific page, default to Jina Reader BEFORE WebFetch. Returns clean markdown of any public URL with near-zero cost.

Usage:

curl -s https://r.jina.ai/<TARGET_URL>
  • Free up to 100 req/min, then ~$0.001/req. Pricing: https://jina.ai/reader
  • Returns content as readable markdown (no DOM noise, no script tags, no nav junk)
  • Works in cloud routines (no MCP, just HTTP). Works locally too.
  • Best for: blog posts, marketing pages, docs, news articles, GitHub READMEs, vendor /customers pages
  • Bad for: pages behind login walls (use Apify), highly dynamic SPAs that need hydration (escalate to 3c)
  • Parallelize across multiple URLs with xargs -P or similar

Level 3b -- WebFetch (only when Jina fails): Use only if Jina Reader returns empty/error, or if the target page is Cloudflare-protected or auth-walled and Jina can't pass. WebFetch is ~10-50x more expensive per page than Jina due to LLM-side processing. Log every WebFetch call with rationale.

Level 3c -- Chrome DevTools MCP snapshot (JS-rendered, local only): For pages that need browser rendering (heavy JS, hydration, single-page apps), use mcp__plugin_chrome-devtools-mcp_chrome-devtools__take_snapshot. Returns accessibility tree (~10x smaller than full DOM). Local Claude Code sessions only -- not available in cloud routines.

Level 4 -- Scholar Gateway (for academic claims): For academic papers or research findings, use Scholar Gateway MCP if available. Structured results, no page scraping.

Level 5 -- Firecrawl scrape-to-FILE (persist full source; for large or long-lived research projects): When you need the FULL text of many pages SAVED for later search and citation (not summarized into context), run q-system/.q-system/scripts/firecrawl-scrape.py <url> <output-dir>. It writes the page's full markdown (onlyMainContent) to a file, so the cascade can grep + cite thousands of sources without hitting context limits. Requires FIRECRAWL_API_KEY (env var ONLY; no committed secret). Fail-closed on an empty body (persists nothing). Use only when persistence beats a one-shot Perplexity/WebFetch answer.

Show full SKILL.md (339 more words)Show less
Token budget
  • Maximum 3 Perplexity calls per research question
  • Maximum 10 Jina Reader calls per research question (cheap, parallelize)
  • Maximum 2 WebFetch calls per research question (only if Jina failed)
  • WebSearch is deprecated in this skill. Use Perplexity for breadth, Jina for depth.
  • If you hit the limit: summarize what you found, list what remains unverified, and ask the user if they want to go deeper
  • Parallel calls are fine. Serial retry loops are not.
Tool-selection rule

If the source is a public marketing/blog/docs/news page, default to Jina (3a). Only escalate to WebFetch (3b) when Jina fails. Use chrome-devtools-mcp (3c) only when JS rendering is required AND you are in a local session. Log every WebFetch call to justify the cost.

What counts as "cited"
  • Local file path + line number = cited
  • Perplexity answer + source URLs it returned = cited
  • Named paper/author + year = cited (mark {{VERIFY_URL}} if no link)
  • "I recall from training data" = NOT cited. Say "I believe X but cannot cite a specific source."

What this mode is NOT

  • It is NOT the default. Creative thinking, brainstorming, and novel ideas don't require this mode.
  • It does NOT mean "be slow." Research efficiently. Use tools in parallel.
  • It does NOT mean "only use existing ideas." You can synthesize across sources to reach new conclusions, but the inputs must be grounded.

How to exit

Say "exit research mode" or switch to any other task.

Relationship to the broader anti-hallucination architecture

Research mode is the runtime enforcement layer. It applies the cite-or-retract rule and the source-lookup cascade during a single session.

The broader pattern is documented at q-system/methodology/anti-hallucination.md. That doc covers:

  • The thesis (LLM is unreliable, make mistakes findable)
  • The full loop (pre-hooks, structured output, post-hooks, verifier, audit, canonical update)
  • Source-of-truth hierarchy (graph.jsonl beats canonical beats dashboard beats drafts)
  • What's automated vs structural vs manual
  • Worked example of catching a real contradiction

Use research mode when you need runtime enforcement. Read the methodology doc when you need to understand why this skill exists and how it fits the rest of the system.
