At a glance

Don't over-equip an agent with tools/MCP servers. An agent skill from Archive228/loopkit.

  • An agent underperforms
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md
  • Tasks that involve MCP servers

What it does

Tool Restraint is an agent skill from Archive228/loopkit. Don't over-equip an agent with tools/MCP servers. More tools = more ways to fail and a higher cognitive load. Use when wiring tools or an agent underperforms.

Its SKILL.md is about 230 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Agent Workflows, covering MCP servers. It works with Model Context Protocol. The repository describes itself as: 33 battle-tested skills + minimal .claude harness for any coding agent (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI). The licence is MIT.

Example prompts

  • “/tool-restraint”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 5ae033e. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Tool Restraint loads about 234 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 43 tokens; SKILL.md has 101 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~43
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~234

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

when_to_use
adding MCP servers, an agent with many tools, "give it access to everything"

Tool Restraint

Loading an agent with 14 MCP servers "just in case" makes it slower and dumber, not more capable — tool-use agents hit sharp capability cliffs as cognitive load rises.

  • Enable only the servers the current work actually uses. Remove the rest.
  • Prefer official servers for credentialed tools; never install five speculatively.
  • Each tool's description eats context on every turn — fewer, sharper tools beat a junk drawer.
  • Before adding a write-scoped server, add a hook that logs every call. If the agent picks the wrong tool or thrashes, the fix is usually fewer tools with clearer descriptions, not a smarter model.
