What it does

Shopify Admin Return Reason Analysis is an agent skill from 40RTY-ai/shopify-admin-skills. Read-only: aggregates return reasons across orders to identify product quality or listing issues.

Its SKILL.md is about 1.5k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts. Compatibility notes: Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI

It sits in Backend & APIs. It works with Shopify. The repository describes itself as: Community-maintained AI agent skills for operating Shopify stores — workflows, optimization, reports and more. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Backend & APIs work in your project

Example prompts

  • “/shopify-admin-return-reason-analysis”

Requirements

  • Compatibility (from SKILL.md): Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. OPERATION: returns — query
  2. Aggregate by: return reason → product → SKU; calculate return count and % of total returns per bucket
  3. OPERATION: orders — query (for return rate context)

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 6765cb4. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • shopify

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

  • Compatibility

Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI

From compatibility in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

Context cost

Shopify Admin Return Reason Analysis loads about 1.5k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 34 tokens; SKILL.md has 353 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~34
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.5k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Purpose

Queries all return requests within a date window and aggregates them by return reason code, product, and SKU. Surfaces which products have the highest return rates and which reasons (wrong size, damaged, not as described, etc.) are most common. Read-only — no mutations.

Prerequisites

  • Authenticated Shopify CLI session: shopify store auth --store <domain> --scopes read_orders,read_returns
  • API scopes: read_orders, read_returns

Parameters

ParameterTypeRequiredDefaultDescription
storestringyes—Store domain (e.g., mystore.myshopify.com)
days_backintegerno30Lookback window for return requests
min_returnsintegerno3Minimum returns per product to include in output
formatstringnohumanOutput format: human or json

Safety

ℹ️ Read-only skill — no mutations are executed. Safe to run at any time.

Workflow Steps

  1. OPERATION: returns — query Inputs: query: "created_at:>='<NOW - days_back days>'", first: 250, pagination cursor Expected output: Return objects with returnLineItems { returnReason, refundableQuantity, fulfillmentLineItem { lineItem { product { title } variant { sku } } } }; paginate until hasNextPage: false

  2. Aggregate by: return reason → product → SKU; calculate return count and % of total returns per bucket

  3. OPERATION: orders — query (for return rate context) Inputs: Same date window, first: 250; count total orders as denominator for return rate calculation

Best Practices

  • Cross-reference high-return products with their listing descriptions and images — "not as described" returns often indicate a copy or photography issue.
  • Use min_returns: 10 for larger stores to focus on statistically significant patterns rather than one-off complaints.
  • Run monthly and compare period-over-period to track whether merchandising or product quality improvements are reducing specific return reasons.
  • Pair with exchange-vs-refund-ratio to understand whether high-return products are recovering revenue via exchanges.
