What it does

Aster Review CI is an agent skill from Zfinix/aster. Run aster code reviews non-interactively in CI, GitHub Actions, or from another agent. Covers aster review --pr, --json, --stream, --comment, diff-from-stdin, token handling, and filtering findings. Use when wiring aster into a pipeline, posting PR comments, or parsing review output programmatically.

Its SKILL.md is about 640 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Development, covering CI/CD, Code review and Pull requests. It works with GitHub Actions. The repository describes itself as: An open-source agent harness for software work. The licence is Apache-2.0.

When your agent uses it

  • Wiring aster into a pipeline
  • Posting PR comments
  • Parsing review output programmatically

Example prompts

  • “/aster-review-ci”

Requirements

  • A credential in GITHUB_TOKEN
  • A credential in ASTER_API_KEY

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit f77a5b4. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • git

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • GITHUB_TOKEN
    • ASTER_API_KEY

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Aster Review CI loads about 640 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 81 tokens; SKILL.md has 197 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~81
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~640

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Aster review in CI and automation

aster review reads a diff, hypothesizes defects, verifies them against the indexed repo, and reports findings. Everything is flag-driven; nothing requires a terminal.

Picking the diff

sh
aster review # current branch vs its base
aster review --range main..HEAD # explicit git range
aster review --diff changes.patch # a saved diff file
git diff main... | aster review --diff - # diff from stdin
aster review --pr 123 # fetch a GitHub PR's diff

--pr needs a token: --token, else GITHUB_TOKEN, else the one stored by aster login. The repo defaults to the origin remote; override with --repo owner/repo.

Machine-readable output

sh
aster review --json # findings as one JSON array
aster review --stream # NDJSON progress events, one per line

Use --json in CI and pipe it to aster fix or your own tooling. --stream is for editors and UIs that want live progress. --tui is the interactive browser; never use it headless.

Posting to the PR

sh
aster review --pr 123 --comment # post findings as inline PR comments

--comment implies --pr. Run it only when you intend to publish; the plain run is read-only.

Scoping and thresholds

sh
aster review -i "src/**/*.rs" -x "**/generated/**" --min-confidence 0.7
  • -i/--include overrides include from aster.yaml; -x/--exclude adds to it. Both repeatable.
  • --min-confidence <0.0-1.0> drops weak findings; falls back to aster.yaml.
  • --no-index skips the symbol index for speed, at the cost of weaker verification. Prefer keeping the index in CI.
  • --repo-root <DIR> points evidence retrieval at a checkout other than the cwd.

Minimal GitHub Actions shape

yaml
- run: aster review --pr ${{ github.event.pull_request.number }} --comment --json > findings.json
  env:
    GITHUB_TOKEN: ${{ secrets.GITHUB_TOKEN }}
    ASTER_API_KEY: ${{ secrets.ASTER_API_KEY }}

The API key comes from ASTER_API_KEY (never from aster.yaml). An aster.yaml committed to the repo supplies models, analyzers, and filters; aster init -y writes a default one.
