database-schema-changesGuide for making database schema changes in Platypus using Drizzle ORM — editing the schema, pushing to a dev database, and generating the migration that ships.
Database Schema Changes is an agent skill from willdady/platypus. Guide for making database schema changes in Platypus using Drizzle ORM — editing the schema, pushing to a dev database, and generating the migration that ships.
Its SKILL.md is about 530 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.
It sits in Databases, covering Database schema design. It works with Drizzle ORM. The repository describes itself as: Self-hosted AI Agents for your whole team — on your infrastructure, your models, around the clock. The licence is MIT.
3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 2147848. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
pnpmgitFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use pnpm and git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Database Schema Changes loads about 527 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 46 tokens; SKILL.md has 272 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from willdady/platypus at commit 2147848, republished under its MIT licence (© willdady). 272 words, ~527 tokens.
.claude/skills/database-schema-changes/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder).Push is for your machine; generate is what ships. Both, every time. A push with no generate leaves a dev database that works and a production deploy that never receives the change — and nothing local tells you, because your own database is already correct.
Edit the schema — the backend's Drizzle schema module, where the tables are declared.
Push it to your dev database. Needs pnpm dev up, since the push talks
to a live Postgres:
pnpm drizzle-kit-pushGenerate the migration. Production applies numbered .sql migrations,
not your schema file, so this is the step that carries the change out of your
machine:
pnpm drizzle-kit-generateDone when git status shows three new or modified artefacts beside your
schema edit: a numbered .sql migration, its snapshot, and an appended journal
entry. All of them are committed, in the same commit as the schema change.
Generate writes DDL — it reads your schema and diffs it. A backfill, a re-shaping of existing rows, or anything else that needs to reason about data is yours to write into the generated migration by hand.
Dev never runs it: the push flow applies DDL only and skips migration files entirely, so a hand-written backfill is invisible until production. Apply the equivalent change to your own database by hand and say so on the PR.
better-auth owns the auth tables — do not hand-edit that generated schema. When you change the auth configuration, regenerate it, then treat the result as a normal schema change and continue from step 2:
pnpm --dir apps/backend dlx @better-auth/cli@latest generate \
--config ./src/auth.ts --output ./src/db/auth-schema.ts --yes(The paths inside that command are arguments the CLI needs, not references to look up.)

Database Schema Changes fits situations like: tasks that involve Database schema design.
Run `npx skills add willdady/platypus --skill database-schema-changes -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/database-schema-changes in willdady/platypus) into .claude/skills/database-schema-changes in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add willdady/platypus --skill database-schema-changes -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/database-schema-changes in willdady/platypus) into .agents/skills/database-schema-changes in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add willdady/platypus --skill database-schema-changes -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/database-schema-changes, .gemini/skills/database-schema-changes, .github/skills/database-schema-changes and .opencode/skills/database-schema-changes in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Database Schema Changes needs the command-line tools its instructions call (pnpm and git).
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Database Schema Changes is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 527 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2.1k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
