At a glance

Navigates a codebase through the code-review-graph MCP tools: architecture overview, symbol search, caller and callee tracing, flows and oversized functions.

  • Works in 6 steps: Call get_architecture_overview_tool for… → Call semantic_search_nodes_tool to find… → Call query_graph_tool with callers_of,… → …
  • Getting oriented in an unfamiliar codebase
  • SKILL.md covers Explore Codebase and Token Efficiency Rules
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

The skill walks the agent through exploring a repository with the code-review-graph MCP server instead of reading files blindly. Steps start with an architecture overview and a list of communities, then a semantic search for a function or class, graph queries for callers, callees, imports and a file's children, flow listing to follow an execution path, a finder for oversized functions, and graph stats only when counts are needed.

Token rules are central: call get_minimal_context_tool with the task first, request minimal detail wherever a tool allows it, prefer a targeted query over a broad listing, and stay within about five tool calls and 800 tokens of graph output per task. The graph narrows the scope but does not replace the source, so the agent reads the implementation and its tests before changing code.

When your agent uses it

  • Getting oriented in an unfamiliar codebase
  • Finding who calls a function or what a module imports
  • Following an execution flow through the code
  • Spotting oversized functions

Example prompts

  • “Give me an architecture overview of this repo using the code graph.”
  • “Who calls processPayment, and what does it call?”
  • “Find the largest functions in the services directory.”
  • “Trace the login flow through the codebase.”

Requirements

  • The code-review-graph MCP server connected to your agent

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Call get_architecture_overview_tool for the community structure. Call list_communities_tool, then get_community_tool, only for the modules…
  2. Call semantic_search_nodes_tool to find a function or class by name or keyword.
  3. Call query_graph_tool with callers_of, callees_of or imports_of to trace relationships. children_of on a file lists its functions and…
  4. Call list_flows_tool, then get_flow_tool for one flow, to follow an execution path.
  5. Call find_large_functions_tool to find oversized functions.
  6. Call list_graph_stats_tool only when you need node, edge and language counts.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 6b12d11. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Explore Codebase with Graph loads about 335 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 21 tokens; SKILL.md has 165 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~21
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~335

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Navigate and understand codebase structure using the knowledge graph

Explore Codebase

Use the code-review-graph MCP tools to find your way around the codebase.

Steps
  1. Call get_architecture_overview_tool for the community structure. Call list_communities_tool, then get_community_tool, only for the modules you need.
  2. Call semantic_search_nodes_tool to find a function or class by name or keyword.
  3. Call query_graph_tool with callers_of, callees_of or imports_of to trace relationships. children_of on a file lists its functions and classes.
  4. Call list_flows_tool, then get_flow_tool for one flow, to follow an execution path.
  5. Call find_large_functions_tool to find oversized functions.
  6. Call list_graph_stats_tool only when you need node, edge and language counts.

Token Efficiency Rules

  • Call get_minimal_context_tool(task="<your task>") before any other graph tool.
  • Pass detail_level="minimal" wherever a tool accepts it. Use "standard" only when minimal is not enough.
  • Prefer a targeted query_graph_tool call over a broad listing call.
  • Budget: about five tool calls and 800 tokens of graph output per task.
  • Read the implementation and its tests before changing code. The graph narrows scope; it does not replace the source.
