strategy-devWorking rules for developing the simon42 Home Assistant dashboard strategy: verify before assuming, protect existing behavior, test on a real system and handle community PRs with care.
This guide distills how the project has been built, aiming at a process that finds mistakes before users do, since the strategy runs in many households. It treats the repository's CLAUDE.md as binding and does not repeat it: module and registry design, documented design decisions that must not be reversed, the release-please and Conventional Commits workflow, and Codacy pitfalls. The agent reads it in full before the first change.
The rules start with understanding before editing, since most real bugs sit in the interplay of registry, views, editor and filter pipeline, and with verifying instead of guessing, using the Home Assistant frontend source as the primary reference and checking git history before accepting a bug report as fact. Existing behavior is protected: anything that visibly changes current dashboards must be opt-in with an unchanged default, and config keys count as public API, so they are never renamed or removed. It also covers quality gates, cross-impact checks and community PRs. The text is written in German.
7 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 944ba94. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
npmghnodenpxgitFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use npm, gh, npx and git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:
GITHUB_TOKENFrom names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
simon42 Dashboard Strategy Dev Guide loads about 3.6k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 155 tokens; SKILL.md has 1,615 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 1,615 words (~3,642 tokens).
“Dieser Skill destilliert die Arbeitsweise, mit der diese Strategy bisher entwickelt wurde. Ziel ist nicht nur funktionierender Code, sondern ein Prozess, der Fehler findet, bevor die Community sie findet: verifizieren statt vermuten, Bestandsverhalten schützen, am echten System testen. Das Projekt…”
