Writing Skills is an agent skill from speakeasy-api/gram. Use when adding, editing, or reviewing an agent skill in this repo (.agents/skills/), when new guidance needs to reach every supported harness (.claude, .codex, .opencode, .cursor), or when deciding whether repeated agent failures should become a skill. Triggers: "add a skill", "write a skill", "SKILL.md", "skills:sync".
Its SKILL.md is about 880 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.
It sits in Agent Workflows, covering Skill authoring. The repository describes itself as: Securely scale AI usage across your organization. A single stack to Connect, Secure, Observe and Distribute agents, MCPs, and Skills within your company. The licence is AGPL-3.0.
4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 1378037. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

No URLs in SKILL.md.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Writing Skills loads about 878 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 84 tokens; SKILL.md has 445 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

.claude/skills/writing-skills/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder).Skills are agent-facing reference docs in .agents/skills/<name>/SKILL.md, symlinked into each supported harness's dotfolder. Core principle: a skill is only as good as a cold agent's ability to act on it — validate with fresh-context subagents performing the real workflow, not by rereading it yourself.
.agents/skills/<name>/SKILL.md — kebab-case, verb-first name (writing-skills, not skill-creation).mise run skills:sync — creates the symlinks in .claude/skills/, .codex/skills/, .opencode/skills/, .cursor/skills/ and prunes stale ones. Never hand-create the links; you will miss a harness.CLAUDE.md; harnesses discover skills from the synced directories and each skill's frontmatter.name + description only. The description is triggering conditions ONLY — third person, starts "Use when …", packed with the symptoms, synonyms, commands, and error strings an agent would match on. Never summarize the skill's workflow there: agents follow the summary and skip the body.
Succinct reference, not narrative: overview with the core principle → quick-reference table → per-workflow detail → common mistakes. Target well under 1000 words. One excellent example beats many. Make only claims you have verified by running the commands, and record observed failure modes with exact error text — hypothetical caveats age badly, empirical ones survive review.
Baseline first: watch an agent attempt the task WITHOUT the skill and record the failure verbatim. No baseline failure ⇒ no skill needed.
Vary rounds between do-the-task and adversarial trap questions; live environments surface what desk-checking cannot. Edits after the ship verdict also get a round — one-line additions included.
Every skill an agent should have is committed under .agents/skills/ and linked into each harness by mise run skills:sync. Third-party skills are copied in and committed the same way; there is no installer that fetches them.
mise skills:sync owns the links.© speakeasy-api, AGPL-3.0. Rendered from Markdown: HTML in the file is shown as text, images as links, and headings moved down two levels. Raw file

Run `npx skills add speakeasy-api/gram --skill writing-skills -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/writing-skills in speakeasy-api/gram) into .claude/skills/writing-skills in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add speakeasy-api/gram --skill writing-skills -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/writing-skills, .gemini/skills/writing-skills, .github/skills/writing-skills and .opencode/skills/writing-skills in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Writing Skills needs the command-line tools its instructions call (mise).
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Writing Skills is published under the AGPL-3.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 878 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.5k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
