resolve-media-analysisMedia intelligence layer for the DaVinci Resolve MCP. An agent skill from samuelgursky/davinci-resolve-mcp.
Resolve Media Analysis is an agent skill from samuelgursky/davinci-resolve-mcp. Media intelligence layer for the DaVinci Resolve MCP. Uses FFprobe, FFmpeg, and optionally Whisper to READ and ANALYZE source media — never modify, transcode, convert, or create derivatives. Provides the MCP with full context of what footage actually is so it can take informed actions within Resolve.
Its SKILL.md is about 1.1k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.
It sits in Media & Creative, covering MCP servers, Speech recognition and synthesis and Video production. It works with FFmpeg and Model Context Protocol. The repository describes itself as: MCP server integration for DaVinci Resolve Studio. The licence is MIT.
3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 94c7a88. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.
From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Resolve Media Analysis loads about 1.1k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 81 tokens; SKILL.md has 525 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from samuelgursky/davinci-resolve-mcp at commit 94c7a88, republished under its MIT licence (© samuelgursky). 525 words, ~1,115 tokens.

Read docs/guides/media-analysis-guide.md for the complete guide. Everything below is Claude Code-specific context.
Never touch the source. Your relationship to source media is READ-ONLY. See docs/guides/media-analysis-guide.md section "The First Rule: Never Touch the Source" for the full rationale from every post-production department.
The scripting API changes per patch release, so "Resolve 21" is not a usable
label. Read resolve_control get_version → build.unavailable_on_this_build
before offering a gated surface; check_version_support asks about one named
symbol. Gated in this domain — note all of it is Resolve's own analysis,
not this repo's:
| Surface | Needs | If absent |
|---|---|---|
MediaPoolItem / Folder.AnalyzeForIntellisearch | 21.0 | No IntelliSearch index |
Project.ResetIntellisearchAnalysis | 21.0 | The index cannot be cleared from a script |
MediaPoolItem / Folder.AnalyzeForSlate | 21.0 | No automatic slate detection |
MediaPoolItem / Folder.PerformAudioClassification / ClearAudioClassification | 21.0 | No Resolve-side audio classification |
MediaPoolItem / Folder.RemoveMotionBlur | 21.0 | Unavailable |
Project.GenerateSpeech | 21.0 | No AI speech generation |
This repo's own analysis stack does not depend on any of them. analyze_media
reads frames and audio off disk and runs its own vision/transcription/embedding
tiers, so an older Resolve loses Resolve's AI features, not this pipeline. Say
which one the user is actually missing.
An empty unavailable_on_this_build means nothing recorded is missing, not
that everything exists — most of the API has never been version-bisected. A
symbol with no gate returns unknown, which means probe it. Probe with
name in dir(obj), never bare hasattr: on a Resolve object hasattr returns
True for every name, real or invented, so it can only say yes.
When using the DaVinci Resolve MCP tools alongside media analysis:
media_pool_item -> get_clip_property(clip_id) returns "File Path"timeline_item -> get_media_pool_item(item_id) -> then get clip propertiesmedia_storage -> get_files(path) lists files in a directoryAnalysis informs Resolve actions. At no point do we create intermediate files that enter the media pipeline.
generate_captions(clip_ref, format='srt'|'vtt', with_chapters=?) — caption
blocks under broadcast rules: line-length and lines-per-block caps, max and
min block duration, breaks at sentence ends then pauses then clauses, timings
snapped to spoken words, a minimum inter-block gap, no single-word orphan.
Never drops a word to make text fit — it refuses instead.assess_grade — numeric grade-damage QC on a decoded frame. See the
color-grade skill; it is exposed here because it lives beside the other frame
analysis. image_qc_capabilities reports numpy/ffmpeg availability and the
cost tiers. On first use, ask the user the three setup questions documented in the guide:
All analysis commands, output format, examples, proactive warnings, and principles are in docs/guides/media-analysis-guide.md. Do not duplicate that content — read and follow it.

Resolve Media Analysis fits situations like: tasks that involve MCP servers; tasks that involve Speech recognition and synthesis; tasks that involve Video production.
Run `npx skills add samuelgursky/davinci-resolve-mcp --skill resolve-media-analysis -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/resolve-media-analysis in samuelgursky/davinci-resolve-mcp) into .claude/skills/resolve-media-analysis in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add samuelgursky/davinci-resolve-mcp --skill resolve-media-analysis -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/resolve-media-analysis in samuelgursky/davinci-resolve-mcp) into .agents/skills/resolve-media-analysis in your project. Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add samuelgursky/davinci-resolve-mcp --skill resolve-media-analysis -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/resolve-media-analysis, .gemini/skills/resolve-media-analysis, .github/skills/resolve-media-analysis and .opencode/skills/resolve-media-analysis in your project.
SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Resolve Media Analysis is instructions for the agent only.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Resolve Media Analysis is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 1.1k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 4.5k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
