At a glance

Advances RStudio's pinned copilot-language-server dependency to a specified release, then uploads it to S3, verifies the install, and opens a PR.

  • Works in 8 steps: Verify starting branch → Validate the version → Check prerequisites → …
  • Bumping the copilot-language-server version in RStudio
  • SKILL.md covers Arguments and Steps
  • Calls aws, git and bash

What it does

This skill runs only on macOS and Linux, and insists on starting from the main branch so the new feature branch is based on the right commit; it validates that the version argument matches the X.Y.Z format before touching anything.

It checks that aws and wget are installed and that AWS credentials actually work, stopping immediately if either check fails rather than discovering the problem after files are already edited. Once checks pass, it creates a version-named branch and updates the COPILOT_VERSION string in NEWS.md and in the dependency install and upload scripts, each of which uses a slightly different syntax that must be matched exactly.

When your agent uses it

  • Bumping the copilot-language-server version in RStudio
  • Preparing a PR for a new Copilot language server release

Example prompts

  • “Update copilot-language-server to 1.459.0 in this repo.”
  • “Bump the pinned Copilot server version and open a PR.”

Requirements

  • AWS CLI with configured credentials
  • wget
  • Must start from the main branch

Workflow steps

8 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Verify starting branch
  2. Validate the version
  3. Check prerequisites
  4. Create a branch
  5. Update version strings
  6. Upload to S3
  7. Verify the install
  8. Commit and open a PR

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit ed04cb7. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • aws
    • git
    • bash

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use aws and git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

RStudio Copilot Language Server Updater loads about 1.1k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 44 tokens; SKILL.md has 480 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~44
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.1k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 480 words (~1,082 tokens).

“Updates the pinned copilot-language-server version across the RStudio codebase, uploads the new version to S3, verifies the install, and opens a PR.”
