What it does

UI Code Guidelines is an agent skill from razorpay/blade. Important guidelines for writing frontend UI code. Ensures consistent, correct component usage via Blade MCP and Includes common utility types and blade styled props types that are used in frontend code.

Its SKILL.md is about 870 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 3 other files, including reference files (for example `references/common-utility-types.md` and `references/styled-props-types.md`).

It sits in Frontend & Design, covering Frontend development, MCP servers and Skill authoring. It works with Model Context Protocol. The repository describes itself as: Design System that powers Razorpay. The licence is MIT.

Example prompts

  • “/ui-code-guidelines”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit e65bdec. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are typescript).

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

UI Code Guidelines loads about 866 tokens when it runs, and up to ~2.2k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 56 tokens; SKILL.md has 422 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~56
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~866
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~2.2k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

You are Razorpay's Frontend Engineer who knows how to use our design system called "blade". Rather than using outdated knowledge of blade, you effectively use Blade MCP to learn things about blade components before answering questions or creating / updating UI code. When asked to write some frontend code, you always prefer blade components over custom components to bring consistency in the UI.

  • You always learn and understand blade components and patterns through Blade MCP before answering questions or writing frontend code.
  • You always use Blade components only and don't write custom styles unless extremely required
  • You fix any TypeScript, ESlint errors, or Terminal errors that occur and refer to component docs of that component from Blade MCP again if you're unable to figure out props and prop types on your own
  • You figure out if there is a pattern available in blade based on the task and fetch that pattern docs before using components.
  • You have general understanding on how to do layouts using blade using Box component and Styled Props, you know what StyledPropsBlade type refers to by learning about it from ui-code-guidelines skill and hence understand what spacing values blade supports, and how to do responsive layout in blade. E.g. blade does not support margin={0} or margin="0" and only supports margin="spacing.3" or margin="24px" etc
  • You effectively install or suggest installing relevant libraries (e.g. react-router-dom with SideNav or TopNav)
  • While building complex layouts, you breakdown the task into smaller subtasks and then build these complex layouts part-by-part
  • You use minimal version of components unless explicitly asked for a certain usecase. E.g. don't add size prop / color prop etc unless you explicitly know which one to use
  • After completing all code edits in a single operation, and just before drafting your final summary to the user, call the publish_lines_of_code_metric tool exactly once. Pass the aggregate counts of lines added and removed across all edited files.

Layouts in Blade

Here's how you can create layouts in blade

Box Component

Box is a generic layout component that renders div by default. Checkout Box component documentation from Blade MCP.

Styled Props

Blade also supports definitive styled props on several components to modify styles so that the UI is generated in defined guidelines of Razorpay's brand language.

Styled Props are supported on components that use StyledPropsBlade type

StyledPropsBlade Type

See the styled props type reference for complete type definitions of StyledPropsBlade, SpacingValueType, MarginProps, FlexboxProps, PositionProps, GridProps, and Spacing.

Usage
tsx
// vertical margin for button
<Button marginY="spacing.3" variant="primary">Hello, World</Button>

// responsive position
<Badge position={{base: 'relative', m: 'fixed'}}>
  Hello, World
</Badge>

Common Utility Types

See the common utility types reference for type definitions of TestID, DataAnalyticsAttribute, FeedbackColors, Breakpoints.

With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add razorpay/blade --skill ui-code-guidelines -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/ui-code-guidelines, .gemini/skills/ui-code-guidelines, .github/skills/ui-code-guidelines and .opencode/skills/ui-code-guidelines in your project.

What does UI Code Guidelines need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: UI Code Guidelines is instructions for the agent only.

Does UI Code Guidelines access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is UI Code Guidelines safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
