What it does

New Research is an agent skill from PromptPartner/agentsmith. Start a durable research / source note that captures what you read and found — fires on "start a research note", "capture these sources", "log my research". Part of the Agentsmith harness; scaffolds docs/research/<slug.md so findings live in the repo, never in disposable memory (R9), and are never silently deleted.

Its SKILL.md is about 460 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts. Compatibility notes: Requires filesystem access; the fast path requires the cross-platform Agentsmith CLI.

It sits in Development, covering Project scaffolding. The repository describes itself as: Universal, model-agnostic operating harness for AI agents (Claude, Codex, Gemini, …) — a lean core + work-type profiles assembled by one setup script. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Project scaffolding

Example prompts

  • “start a research note”
  • “capture these sources”
  • “log my research”
  • “/new-research”

Requirements

  • Compatibility (from SKILL.md): Requires filesystem access; the fast path requires the cross-platform Agentsmith CLI.

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. slug = the topic lowercased, every run of non-alphanumeric characters → -, ends trimmed.
  2. If docs/research/.md already exists, STOP — append to it, never overwrite.
  3. Otherwise create it with a no-delete banner (obsolete → move to docs/research/_archive/, R9)

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 19afde4. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

  • Compatibility

Requires filesystem access; the fast path requires the cross-platform Agentsmith CLI.

From compatibility in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

Context cost

New Research loads about 461 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 83 tokens; SKILL.md has 190 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~83
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~461

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

New research note

Research belongs in the repo, traceable to sources, and is never silently deleted (R9). This scaffolds one note per topic.

When this fires

"start a research note" / "capture these sources" / beginning any multi-source investigation whose findings should outlive the session.

Fast path — if the Agentsmith CLI is available

Run agentsmith new-research "topic name" — use .agentsmith/agentsmith on macOS/Linux or .agentsmith\\agentsmith.cmd on Windows when the command is not on PATH. It slugifies the title and writes docs/research/<slug>.md from the template (it won't overwrite an existing file).

Fallback — no CLI

  1. slug = the topic lowercased, every run of non-alphanumeric characters → -, ends trimmed.
  2. If docs/research/<slug>.md already exists, STOP — append to it, never overwrite.
  3. Otherwise create it with a no-delete banner (obsolete → move to docs/research/_archive/, R9) and these sections:
    • Question / scope
    • Sources consulted — url or citation; what you actually opened, dated.
    • Findings — each traceable to a source above; mark single-sourced / uncertain items.
    • Open questions / what was NOT checked.

Report

Name the file created and remind the operator to commit it (R9 — research lives in git, not memory). Every finding you add later must cite a source already in the note.

How do I install New Research in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add PromptPartner/agentsmith --skill new-research -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/new-research in PromptPartner/agentsmith) into .claude/skills/new-research in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install New Research in Codex?

Run `npx skills add PromptPartner/agentsmith --skill new-research -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/new-research in PromptPartner/agentsmith) into .agents/skills/new-research in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use New Research in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add PromptPartner/agentsmith --skill new-research -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/new-research, .gemini/skills/new-research, .github/skills/new-research and .opencode/skills/new-research in your project.

What does New Research need to run?
