Harness Doctor is an agent skill from PromptPartner/agentsmith. Check whether this project's Agentsmith harness is installed correctly and healthy — fires on "is my harness set up right?", "harness doctor", "check my harness". Part of the Agentsmith harness; checks each selected agent's managed rules, settings, skills, hooks, verification, and leanness with a one-line fix for each finding.
Its SKILL.md is about 850 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts. Compatibility notes: Requires filesystem and command access; the full report requires the cross-platform Agentsmith CLI.
It sits in Agent Workflows. The repository describes itself as: Universal, model-agnostic operating harness for AI agents (Claude, Codex, Gemini, …) — a lean core + work-type profiles assembled by one setup script. The licence is MIT.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 19afde4. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.
From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Requires filesystem and command access; the full report requires the cross-platform Agentsmith CLI.
From compatibility in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Harness Doctor loads about 845 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 86 tokens; SKILL.md has 389 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from PromptPartner/agentsmith at commit 19afde4, republished under its MIT licence (© PromptPartner). 389 words, ~845 tokens.
.claude/skills/harness-doctor/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder).Confirm the harness is wired correctly, in plain language, with a concrete fix per finding.
"is my harness set up right / healthy?" / "harness doctor" / after an install or a --self-update.
Use the agent named by the operator or the explicit AGENTSMITH_AGENT value. Never infer the active
agent from this skill's install path: portable canonical content may be copied into a required
client adapter such as .claude/skills. Without an explicit agent, run the common project checks
and label agent-specific capabilities as unknown.
Run agentsmith doctor, adding --agent <id[,id...]> when the target is known. If the command is
not on PATH, use .agentsmith/agentsmith on macOS/Linux or .agentsmith\\agentsmith.cmd on Windows. Report instructions,
actual safety, skills, MCP/config, hooks/scanner, and runtime helpers separately. For instructions,
report the effective global/project/nested chain, fingerprints, managed core metadata, and
combined/duplicate token estimates. An unsupported optional capability does not make instruction
discovery unhealthy, and a duplicate core is a warning rather than permission to rewrite it.
Check each; report pass, or a one-line fix:
AGENTS.md is present and contains the AgentSmith BEGIN/END managed
block. When a target requires a generated instruction adapter such as CLAUDE.md, compare its
managed content with AGENTS.md. Fix: update the intended agent through the Agentsmith installer..claude/settings.json and/or settings.local.json. For Codex, validate .codex/config.toml
when present and the managed config.toml under CODEX_HOME (or the user's .codex directory
when that variable is unset). Never treat one client's configuration as proof of another's..agents/skills pack first, then any genuinely required
client adapter and the target's declared hook integration. Never report hook parity for a client
that only discovers instructions or skills..harness/verify.conf exists AND has a real phase — not just the sanity :: placeholder.
Fix: edit it to list this project's real checks.agentsmith verify --list succeeds without requiring Bash or WSL.AGENTS.md, and report the line/token budget.
Over budget → move prose into a skill or doc, not more core/.A short pass/fix list headed by the selected agent or “common project checks,” most-important first. End with the single highest-value fix to do next.

Harness Doctor fits situations like: agent Workflows work in your project.
Run `npx skills add PromptPartner/agentsmith --skill harness-doctor -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/harness-doctor in PromptPartner/agentsmith) into .claude/skills/harness-doctor in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add PromptPartner/agentsmith --skill harness-doctor -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/harness-doctor in PromptPartner/agentsmith) into .agents/skills/harness-doctor in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add PromptPartner/agentsmith --skill harness-doctor -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/harness-doctor, .gemini/skills/harness-doctor, .github/skills/harness-doctor and .opencode/skills/harness-doctor in your project.
SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Harness Doctor is instructions for the agent only. Compatibility (from SKILL.md): Requires filesystem and command access; the full report requires the cross-platform Agentsmith CLI..
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

About 845 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.4k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
