At a glance

Fetches a YouTube transcript with a helper script and reshapes it into chapters, summaries, X threads, blog posts or timestamped quotes.

  • Works in 5 steps: Fetch the transcript using the helper… → Validate: confirm the output is… → Chunk if needed: if the transcript… → …
  • Summarizing a YouTube video from its URL
  • SKILL.md covers When to use, Setup, Helper Script and Output Formats, plus 2 more sections
  • Runs Python scripts from its folder; calls uv; reaches youtube.com

What it does

The transcript of a YouTube video is pulled with a helper script, scripts/fetch_transcript.py, and reshaped into the format you ask for. The script accepts standard watch URLs, youtu.be short links, shorts, embeds, live links or a bare 11-character video ID, and returns JSON with metadata.

Output formats are timestamped chapters grouped by topic shifts, a short summary, chapters each with a paragraph summary, a numbered thread for X with each post under 280 characters, a full blog post with sections and takeaways, and notable quotes with timestamps. A references/output-formats.md file describes the layouts. Setup installs youtube-transcript-api version 1.2.2 with uv so the dependency lands in the same isolated environment that runs the script.

When your agent uses it

  • Summarizing a YouTube video from its URL
  • Turning a video into a thread, blog post or chapter list
  • Pulling timestamped quotes from a talk
  • Getting a transcript of a video for reuse elsewhere

Example prompts

  • “Summarize this YouTube video in a short overview: https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ”
  • “Turn this conference talk into a blog post with sections and key takeaways.”
  • “Make an X thread from this video, with each post under 280 characters.”
  • “List chapters with timestamps for this YouTube video.”

Requirements

  • `uv` to install and run the helper script
  • The `youtube-transcript-api` package, version 1.2.2
  • Network access to YouTube

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Fetch the transcript using the helper script with --text-only --timestamps via uv run python.
  2. Validate: confirm the output is non-empty and in the expected language. If empty, retry without --language to get any available…
  3. Chunk if needed: if the transcript exceeds ~50K characters, split into overlapping chunks (~40K with 2K overlap) and summarize each chunk…
  4. Transform into the requested output format. If the user did not specify a format, default to a summary.
  5. Verify: re-read the transformed output to check for coherence, correct timestamps, and completeness before presenting.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 0d240dd. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 1 file in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • uv

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • youtube.com

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

YouTube Transcript Reformatter loads about 905 tokens when it runs, and up to ~1.2k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 18 tokens; SKILL.md has 346 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~18
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~905
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~1.2k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

YouTube Content Tool

When to use

Use when the user shares a YouTube URL or video link, asks to summarize a video, requests a transcript, or wants to extract and reformat content from any YouTube video. Transforms transcripts into structured content (chapters, summaries, threads, blog posts).

Extract transcripts from YouTube videos and convert them into useful formats.

Setup

Use uv so the dependency is installed into the same task-local isolated environment that runs the helper script:

bash
uv pip install youtube-transcript-api==1.2.2

Helper Script

SKILL_DIR is the directory containing this SKILL.md file. The script accepts any standard YouTube URL format, short links (youtu.be), shorts, embeds, live links, or a raw 11-character video ID.

bash
# JSON output with metadata
uv run python SKILL_DIR/scripts/fetch_transcript.py "https://youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID"

# Plain text (good for piping into further processing)
uv run python SKILL_DIR/scripts/fetch_transcript.py "URL" --text-only

# With timestamps
uv run python SKILL_DIR/scripts/fetch_transcript.py "URL" --timestamps

# Specific language with fallback chain
uv run python SKILL_DIR/scripts/fetch_transcript.py "URL" --language tr,en

Output Formats

After fetching the transcript, format it based on what the user asks for:

  • Chapters: Group by topic shifts, output timestamped chapter list
  • Summary: Concise 5-10 sentence overview of the entire video
  • Chapter summaries: Chapters with a short paragraph summary for each
  • Thread: Twitter/X thread format — numbered posts, each under 280 chars
  • Blog post: Full article with title, sections, and key takeaways
  • Quotes: Notable quotes with timestamps
Example — Chapters Output
00:00 Introduction — host opens with the problem statement
03:45 Background — prior work and why existing solutions fall short
12:20 Core method — walkthrough of the proposed approach
24:10 Results — benchmark comparisons and key takeaways
31:55 Q&A — audience questions on scalability and next steps

Workflow

  1. Fetch the transcript using the helper script with --text-only --timestamps via uv run python.
  2. Validate: confirm the output is non-empty and in the expected language. If empty, retry without --language to get any available transcript. If still empty, tell the user the video likely has transcripts disabled.
  3. Chunk if needed: if the transcript exceeds ~50K characters, split into overlapping chunks (~40K with 2K overlap) and summarize each chunk before merging.
  4. Transform into the requested output format. If the user did not specify a format, default to a summary.
  5. Verify: re-read the transformed output to check for coherence, correct timestamps, and completeness before presenting.

Error Handling

  • Transcript disabled: tell the user; suggest they check if subtitles are available on the video page.
  • Private/unavailable video: relay the error and ask the user to verify the URL.
  • No matching language: retry without --language to fetch any available transcript, then note the actual language to the user.
  • Dependency missing: run uv pip install youtube-transcript-api==1.2.2 and retry.
