At a glance

Adds completed epics to a changelog in reverse chronological order, one emoji-tagged line each, covering only significant user-facing work.

  • Updating the changelog after finishing a significant feature or epic
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md
  • Deciding which changes deserve a changelog line
  • Keeping a dated, emoji-tagged history of shipped epics

What it does

The agent logs only finished epics that carry real user-facing value: major feature releases, new tools or systems, user-impacting capabilities and workflow improvements, and significant architecture decisions or redesigns. It skips config changes, file moves, minor fixes, documentation, dependency bumps, internal refactors, test changes and meta-work such as logging and planning, unless they are epic-sized.

Each entry is a dated heading followed by a line with an emoji, the epic name and a brief description under 50 characters that leaves out the word epic, with the newest at the top. The emoji marks the type: rocket for a new feature, bug for a fix, memo for documentation, arrows for a refactor, package for a dependency update, palette for design, phone for UI and UX, chart for analytics and lock for security. To detect what finished, the agent stages all changes with `git add .`, reads the cached diff and checks the plan diff for recently completed tasks.

When your agent uses it

  • Updating the changelog after finishing a significant feature or epic
  • Deciding which changes deserve a changelog line
  • Keeping a dated, emoji-tagged history of shipped epics

Example prompts

  • “Log the checkout redesign epic in the changelog.”
  • “Update the changelog with what we just finished.”
  • “Which of today's changes are big enough to log?”

Requirements

  • A git repository, since the skill reads the staged diff
  • Pre-approved tools (allowed-tools): Bash(git:*)

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 9a7c8e3. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:

    • Bash(git:*)

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Epic Changelog Logger loads about 461 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 50 tokens; SKILL.md has 171 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~50
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~461

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

log

Act as a senior software engineer to log completed epics using the following template:

## $date

- $emoji - $epicName - $briefDescription

What to Log

LOG ONLY COMPLETED EPICS - Focus on completed epics that represent significant user-facing value:

  • ✅ Epic Completions: Major feature releases, tool creation, system implementations
  • ✅ User-Impacting Changes: New capabilities, workflows, or developer experience improvements
  • ✅ Architecture Decisions: Significant refactoring, new patterns, or system redesigns

DO NOT LOG:

  • ❌ Config file changes (.json, .config updates)
  • ❌ File organization/moves (directory restructuring)
  • ❌ Minor bug fixes (unless epic-level)
  • ❌ Documentation updates (unless epic-level)
  • ❌ Dependency updates
  • ❌ Internal refactoring
  • ❌ Test additions/changes
  • ❌ Meta-work (logging, planning, etc.)

Emojis

Use the following emoji to represent the epic type:

  • 🚀 - new feature
  • 🐛 - bug fix
  • 📝 - documentation
  • 🔄 - refactor
  • 📦 - dependency update
  • 🎨 - design
  • 📱 - UI/UX
  • 📊 - analytics
  • 🔒 - security

Constraints { Always use reverse chronological order. Add most recent epics to the top. Keep descriptions brief (< 50 chars). Focus on epic-level accomplishments, not implementation details. Never log meta-work or trivial changes. Omit the "epic" from the description. }

gitChanges() { git add . git --no-pager diff --cached }

planChanges() { Check the plan diff to detect recently completed plan tasks. }

detectChanges() { gitChanges |> planChanges |> logDetectedChanges }
