What it does

Voice And Tone is an agent skill from Owl-Listener/designpowers. Use when establishing or applying brand voice — defining voice attributes, tone adaptation across contexts, vocabulary lists, writing examples, and ensuring consistent personality across the interface

Its SKILL.md is about 680 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Writing & Content, covering Brand voice and tone. The repository describes itself as: An agent design team you control: 10 agents that run an inclusive design process while you direct. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Applying brand voice — defining voice attributes
  • Tone adaptation across contexts
  • Vocabulary lists
  • Writing examples

Example prompts

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit cb00757. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Voice And Tone loads about 681 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 54 tokens; SKILL.md has 308 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~54
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Use when establishing or applying brand voice — defining voice attributes, tone adaptation across contexts, vocabulary lists, writing examples, and ensuring consistent personality across the interface

Voice and Tone

Voice is who you are. Tone is how you say it right now. Voice stays constant. Tone adapts to context. This skill defines both so every word sounds like the same person wrote it.

When to Use

  • At the start of a project, during or after design-strategy
  • When the content-writer agent needs voice guardrails
  • When interface copy sounds inconsistent across screens

Step 1: Define Voice Attributes

Choose 3-5. For each, define "this, not that":

AttributeThisNot that
WarmFriendly, approachableSycophantic, emoji-heavy
KnowledgeableConfident, preciseAcademic, condescending
DirectClear, action-orientedBlunt, cold, robotic
EncouragingCelebrates effortPatronising, fake-cheerful

The "not that" column prevents drift.

Step 2: Define Tone by Context

ContextFeelExample
SuccessCelebration, warmth"Your monstera is happy. Next water Thursday."
ErrorCalm, helpful, no blame"We couldn't save that. Check your connection and try again."
OnboardingWelcoming, confidence-building"Let's get to know your plants. About 30 seconds."
Empty stateInviting, action-oriented"Your windowsill is empty. Add your first plant."
LoadingReassuring, brief"Checking your plants..."
DestructiveClear, calm, reversible"Remove this plant? You can undo this."

Step 3: Build the Vocabulary

Always useNever use
waterirrigate
happyoptimal
check it outinvestigate
youthe user

The content-writer agent uses this as a constraint.

Step 4: Set Reading Level

AudienceTarget
General consumerGrade 6-8
Professional toolGrade 8-10
Technical docsGrade 10-12

Voice Audit Checklist

  • Every screen sounds like the same person wrote it
  • Voice attributes are present in the copy
  • Tone matches the context
  • Vocabulary list words used consistently
  • Reading level at or below target
  • Copy works read aloud by a screen reader

What You Deliver

  • Voice attributes table (3-5, with "this not that")
  • Tone guide by context with examples
  • Vocabulary list
  • Reading level target
  • 3-5 before/after examples

Integration

  • Informed by: design-strategy, design-discovery
  • Feeds into: content-writer agent, accessible-content, design-critic
