Fetch recent release payloads from the OpenShift release controller

  • Works in 3 steps: Determine defaults → Fetch payloads → Present results
  • SKILL.md covers When to Use This Skill, Implementation Steps, Output Format and Error Handling
  • Runs Python scripts from its folder; calls python3

What it does

Fetch Payloads is an agent skill from openshift-eng/ai-helpers. Fetch recent release payloads from the OpenShift release controller

Its SKILL.md is about 690 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 1 other file (for example `fetch_payloads.py`).

The repository describes itself as: Developer productivity tools for Claude Code & other AI assistants. The licence is Apache-2.0.

Example prompts

  • “/fetch-payloads”

Requirements

  • Python 3

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Determine defaults
  2. Fetch payloads
  3. Present results

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit a627176. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Ships script files (Python), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • python3

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Fetch Payloads loads about 694 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 21 tokens; SKILL.md has 265 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~21
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~694

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Fetch recent release payloads from the OpenShift release controller

Fetch Payloads

This skill fetches recent release payloads from the OpenShift release controller, showing their tag name, acceptance phase, timestamp, blocking job results, and a link to the release details page.

When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when you need to:

  • Find the latest accepted (or rejected) nightly or CI payloads for a given OCP version
  • Check the current state of release payloads for any architecture
  • See which blocking jobs failed for rejected payloads
  • Get a link to the release controller page for a specific payload

Implementation Steps

Step 1: Determine defaults

If the user did not specify an architecture or stream, default to amd64 and nightly. If no version is specified, the script automatically fetches the latest from the Sippy API.

Step 2: Fetch payloads
bash
FETCH_PAYLOADS="${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/skills/fetch-payloads/fetch_payloads.py"
if [ ! -f "$FETCH_PAYLOADS" ]; then
  FETCH_PAYLOADS=$(find ~/.claude/plugins -type f -path "*/ci/skills/fetch-payloads/fetch_payloads.py" 2>/dev/null | sort | head -1)
fi
if [ -z "$FETCH_PAYLOADS" ] || [ ! -f "$FETCH_PAYLOADS" ]; then echo "ERROR: fetch_payloads.py not found" >&2; exit 2; fi
python3 "$FETCH_PAYLOADS" [architecture] [version] [stream]

Examples:

bash
# Latest amd64 nightly payloads (all defaults, last 5)
python3 "$FETCH_PAYLOADS"

# arm64 4.18 nightly
python3 "$FETCH_PAYLOADS" arm64 4.18 nightly

# Only accepted payloads
python3 "$FETCH_PAYLOADS" amd64 4.18 nightly --phase Accepted

# Show more results
python3 "$FETCH_PAYLOADS" amd64 4.18 nightly --limit 20
Step 3: Present results

The script outputs one block per payload to stdout with job details. Present to the user as-is or summarize.

Output Format

The script outputs a JSON object to stdout:

json
{
  "hours_since_last_accepted": 23.5,
  "last_accepted_tag": "4.22.0-0.nightly-2026-02-24-030944",
  "payloads": [ ... ]
}
  • hours_since_last_accepted: Hours since the most recent Accepted payload in the stream (from the full unfiltered history), or null if none found.
  • last_accepted_tag: Tag name of the most recent Accepted payload, or null if none found.
  • payloads: Array of payload objects, each containing tag, phase, release controller URL, and job results (blocking and async jobs with Prow URLs and retry details).

Error Handling

  1. Unknown architecture: Exits with error listing valid architectures
  2. CI stream on non-amd64: Exits with error (CI stream is amd64-only)
  3. Network error: Prints connection failure to stderr, exits 1
  4. No payloads found: Prints message to stderr, exits 1

How do I install Fetch Payloads in Codex?

Run `npx skills add openshift-eng/ai-helpers --skill fetch-payloads -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (plugins/ci/skills/fetch-payloads in openshift-eng/ai-helpers) into .agents/skills/fetch-payloads in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Fetch Payloads in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add openshift-eng/ai-helpers --skill fetch-payloads -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/fetch-payloads, .gemini/skills/fetch-payloads, .github/skills/fetch-payloads and .opencode/skills/fetch-payloads in your project.

What does Fetch Payloads need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Fetch Payloads needs Python for the scripts in its folder and the command-line tools its instructions call (python3). Our summary lists: Python 3.

Does Fetch Payloads access the network?
