At a glance

Create a mapping from source language files to target language files for code migrations.

  • Works in 5 steps: Many-to-many mapping: A source file may… → Complete coverage: EVERY source file… → Complete target coverage: EVERY target… → …
  • Documenting a migration project
  • SKILL.md covers Task, Output Format, Rules and How to Identify Mappings, plus 2 more sections
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

Migration Mapping is an agent skill from OpenHands/extensions. Create a mapping from source language files to target language files for code migrations. Use when evaluating or documenting a migration project.

Its SKILL.md is about 570 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts. Compatibility notes: Requires completed migration with source and target code

It sits in Development, covering Code migrations. The repository describes itself as: Public registry for OpenHands extensions. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Documenting a migration project
  • Tasks that involve Code migrations

Example prompts

  • “/migration-mapping”

Requirements

  • Compatibility (from SKILL.md): Requires completed migration with source and target code

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Many-to-many mapping: A source file may map to multiple target files, and a target file may implement logic from multiple source files
  2. Complete coverage: EVERY source file must appear as a key in the mapping
  3. Complete target coverage: EVERY target file should appear as a value at least once
  4. Empty arrays: If a source file has no corresponding target implementation, use an empty array []
  5. Incremental: If a mapping file already exists, update it rather than replacing it

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit d008b81. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are json).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

  • Compatibility

Requires completed migration with source and target code

From compatibility in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

Context cost

Migration Mapping loads about 571 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 41 tokens; SKILL.md has 220 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~41
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~571

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

migration mapping, source target mapping, file mapping

Create a mapping from source language files (e.g., COBOL) to target language files (e.g., Java) to document which target files implement the functionality of each source file.

Task

Examine all source language files and identify the corresponding target language files that implement the same functionality. This mapping is essential for:

  • Migration quality evaluation
  • Traceability documentation
  • Gap analysis

Output Format

Save the mapping as a JSON file with this structure:

json
{
  "source_file_1.cbl": ["target_file_a.java", "target_file_b.java"],
  "source_file_2.cbl": ["target_file_c.java"],
  "source_file_3.cbl": []
}

Rules

How to Identify Mappings

Look for:

  • Matching class/program names
  • Similar function/paragraph names
  • Matching business logic patterns
  • Comments referencing source files
  • Import/include statements
  • Data structure similarities

Example

For a COBOL-to-Java migration:

json
{
  "CALC001.cbl": ["InvoiceCalculator.java", "TaxCalculator.java"],
  "CUST002.cbl": ["CustomerService.java", "CustomerRepository.java"],
  "UTIL003.cbl": ["StringUtils.java"],
  "SCREEN001.cbl": []
}

Note: SCREEN001.cbl maps to nothing because UI code was not migrated.

Verification

After creating the mapping:

  • Every source file is a key
  • No duplicate keys
  • Target files are relative paths from project root
  • JSON is valid and well-formatted

Can I use Migration Mapping in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add OpenHands/extensions --skill migration-mapping -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/migration-mapping, .gemini/skills/migration-mapping, .github/skills/migration-mapping and .opencode/skills/migration-mapping in your project.

What does Migration Mapping need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Migration Mapping is instructions for the agent only. Compatibility (from SKILL.md): Requires completed migration with source and target code.

Does Migration Mapping access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Migration Mapping safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Migration Mapping use?

Migration Mapping is published under the MIT licence (declared in SKILL.md). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Migration Mapping use?

About 571 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2.3k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Migration Mapping?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Migration Mapping: Migrate Core Code to Submodules (tinyhumansai/openhuman, 41k stars), Migrate Internal Package into Ghost (TryGhost/Ghost, 55k stars), ast-grep Structural Search (code-yeongyu/oh-my-openagent, 70k stars) and Deprecate R Functions and Arguments (tidyverse/dplyr, 5.1k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.
