At a glance

Launches two KenshiCoop clients side by side on an ultrawide monitor, booted to the title screen, so one person can play host and join and connect manually through F2.

  • Works in 3 steps: Load the SAME save on both clients… → On each window press F2 -> set… → Free-play: each window drives its own…
  • Starting a hands-on side-by-side test of the KenshiCoop mod
  • SKILL.md covers Launch command, In-game connect (by hand,…, Common variations and Preconditions, plus 1 more section
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

A manual free test means both the host and join clients run on one machine, tiled side by side on the ultrawide with no auto-exit and no scenario, so the user drives both characters and watches them stay in sync by eye. The title-screen launch boots both clients to the Kenshi main menu with no auto-load and no auto-connect, leaving the user to load a save and switch to online mode through the F2 panel themselves, exercising the real remote-play flow with full control over which save and which connection role each client takes.

The launch script builds the latest DLL, deploys it to both installs, resizes and tiles each client window host-left and join-right on an ultrawide monitor, launches both to the main menu, and returns while the windows stay open. The user then loads the identical save on both clients, since NPC sync is resolved by hand, and sets one to host and the other to join over a preset local connection. Variations include skipping the build, colored authority markers, disabling tiling, or an auto-connect session instead of the title screen; the skill also warns to use a throwaway save, since connecting bakes the live world over the loaded save.

When your agent uses it

  • Starting a hands-on side-by-side test of the KenshiCoop mod
  • Eyeballing sync between host and join after a new build
  • Running both Kenshi clients on one machine for manual testing
  • Choosing between a title-screen launch and an auto-connect launch

Example prompts

  • “Launch a manual freeplay session so I can test the latest build myself.”
  • “Start both clients tiled side by side, but skip the build this time.”
  • “Launch with auto-load and auto-connect using a specific save instead.”

Requirements

  • PowerShell
  • Kenshi installed twice, for host and join, with windowed mode enabled
  • An ultrawide monitor for the default side-by-side layout

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Load the SAME save on both clients (Continue / Load). NPC sync is
  2. On each window press F2 -> set Connection ONLINE: host role on one client,
  3. Free-play: each window drives its own character; watch it render/follow on

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 5a761e1. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

Context cost

Kenshi Manual Freeplay Session loads about 835 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 145 tokens; SKILL.md has 376 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~145
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

description
Launch a manual free-play KenshiCoop session with host + join tiled side-by-side on the ultrawide monitor so one person can play both clients. Boots both clients to the title screen (no auto-load, no auto-connect); the user loads a save and goes online by hand via the F2 panel. Covers the exact manual_session.ps1 -TitleScreen invocation, the side-by-side ultrawide layout, and how to end the session. Use when the user asks to start a manual/free test, play both clients, do a hands-on side-by-side co-op session, or eyeball the latest mod build in game.

Manual Free-Play Session (title screen, side-by-side ultrawide)

A "manual free test" = both clients (host + join) launched on this one machine, tiled side-by-side on the ultrawide, left running with NO self-exit and NO scenario, so the user drives both characters and eyeballs sync.

-TitleScreen boots BOTH clients to the Kenshi main menu with no auto-load and no auto-connect. The user then loads a save and goes ONLINE via F2 by hand - the real remote-play flow, with full control over which save and connection role.

scripts/manual_session.ps1 still does the side-by-side ultrawide layout by default: it resizes each client to 1720x1440 via set_video_mode.ps1 (2x1720 = 3440 wide) and tiles them host-left / join-right on the widest monitor via arrange_windows.ps1, re-pinning through the load screen.

Launch command

powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File scripts/manual_session.ps1 -TitleScreen

This builds the latest DLL, deploys it to both installs, sizes + tiles the two windows on the ultrawide, launches host then join to the main menu, and returns immediately (windows stay up until closed).

In-game connect (by hand, after launch)

  1. Load the SAME save on both clients (Continue / Load). NPC sync is resolve-by-hand, so both MUST be on identical saves.
  2. On each window press F2 -> set Connection ONLINE: host role on one client, join role on the other. UDP loopback is preset.
  3. Free-play: each window drives its own character; watch it render/follow on the other.

Do co-op free play on a DEBUG save (together, separate, zoom, or a throwaway), NEVER a validation/fixture save (sync, squad1, duel1, fixtures): on connect the host armConnectPush() bakes the live world over the loaded save and rots the fixture. See the coop-save-orchestration skill.

Common variations

  • Reuse the current build (skip the ~minutes-long compile): add -SkipBuild.
  • Colored authority markers on the join (green DRV / red HID / yellow LOC): add -DebugMarkers.
  • Do not resize/tile (leave windows as-is): add -NoTile.
  • Auto-load + auto-connect instead of the title screen: drop -TitleScreen and pass -Save "together" -Inhabit (host owns rank 0, join owns the rest).

-Sync is NOT needed on a single machine - both installs read the same per-user save folder.

Preconditions

  • Windowed mode: tiling requires kenshi.cfg Full Screen = No (the script sets the video mode; if a window won't tile, confirm it launched windowed).
  • The join install exists (scripts/setup_join_install.cmd created %USERPROFILE%\Kenshi-Join).

Ending the session

Close both game windows (no auto-exit, no screenshots).
