What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 1cbf1f0. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Family Cookbook Archivist loads about 1.8k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 163 tokens; SKILL.md has 1,033 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~163
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

description
Rescue the recipes that exist only in someone's hands — the interview that converts a handful of this and cook until it looks right into measurements, the cook-along session that captures what paper cannot, and the cookbook format that keeps the stories attached to the food. Use when asked to write down grandma's recipes, preserve family recipes, how much is some flour, or make a family cookbook. Produces the recipe-extraction interview, the calibration tricks for unmeasured cooking, the cook-along protocol, the story capture per dish, and the cookbook assembly plan. A cousin of oral-history-kit, aimed at the kitchen.

Family Cookbook Archivist

The best cook in the family has never measured anything, and every recipe that matters is stored in muscle memory that cannot be photocopied. Ask for the recipe and you get "a bit of flour, cook it until it's done" — accurate, and useless to everyone who comes after. This skill runs the rescue: the interview that respects how they actually cook while extracting what a written recipe needs, the calibration tricks (their handful, measured once, is a unit forever), the cook-along session where their "until it looks right" gets photographed at the exact moment it looks right — and the story capture, because the dish without the story of who it was cooked for is just ingredients.

What This Skill Produces

  • The extraction interview — per dish: the questions that get quantities, sequence, and the tells (what it should look, sound, and smell like at each stage)
  • The calibration kit — converting their units: the handful measured once, the "some" weighed while they aren't looking, the their-spoon-versus-a-teaspoon table
  • The cook-along protocol — shopping together, filming the hands, photographing the it-looks-right moments, and the tasting notes that catch what they forgot to say
  • The story capture — where the dish came from, who taught it, when it was cooked and for whom — one page per recipe, in their words
  • The cookbook assembly — testing each written version without them (the real fidelity check), the format, and the correction pass where they taste your attempt

Required Inputs

Ask for these if not provided:

  • The cook and the kitchen — who holds the recipes, their patience for being asked, and whether cooking alongside them is possible or this must run over calls
  • The rescue list — the dishes that would hurt most to lose, ranked; the festival dishes and the everyday ones both, since the everyday ones are the ones nobody thinks to save
  • The state of things — honestly, how much time and energy the cook has; the protocol for many relaxed Sundays and for a few precious visits are different
  • What exists already — the stained index cards, the annotated cookbook margins, the aunt who half-knows three of them
  • The audience — who the book is for, which decides language, units, and how much technique to spell out

Framework: Watch, Measure Their Units, Test Without Them

  1. Interview in the kitchen, not the living room. Recipes are stored in the hands; the answers arrive while the hands are moving. The first question is never "what's the recipe" — it is "can I watch you make it, and pester you while you do?"
  2. Calibrate, don't convert them. Never make them use measuring cups — it changes the cooking and insults the expertise. Instead: measure their units once. Their handful of rice: weigh it. Their pour of oil: catch it in a cup after. Their pinch: three trials, average it. One calibration session makes every future "some" precise.
  3. Capture the tells, not just the amounts. The real recipe is conditions: "until it smells nutty," "when the edges pull away," "it should coat the spoon." Photograph or film each tell at the moment they call it. These are the lines that make the written recipe actually work.
  4. Get the sequence and the secrets separately. The order of operations comes from watching; the secrets ("the splash of vinegar — my mother never told anyone") come from the story questions, usually on the second or third session once the project has earned trust.
  5. Attach the story while the food cooks. Waiting time is interview time: who taught you this, when did you first cook it, who asked for it most, what went wrong the famous time. One page per dish, their phrasing kept.
  6. The fidelity test is cooking it without them. Write the recipe, then someone else cooks it from the page alone. Where it fails, the page was wrong, not the cook. Bring them your attempt to taste — the corrections they give a plate are sharper than any they give a draft.
  7. Ship the modest book. Tested recipes, the story pages, the photos of their hands and the tells, the calibration table as an appendix ("Nana's handful = 85g"). Printed simply, corrected by them if there is time. A spiral-bound draft in their lifetime beats a hardcover after it.

Output Format

Cookbook rescue: [cook] · [n] dishes ranked · first session: [date]

The rescue list: [dish — why it matters — everyday/festival — risk of loss]

Per-dish extraction sheet (one per recipe)

  • Watch notes: [sequence as performed · timings actually observed]
  • Calibrations: [their unit = measured amount]
  • The tells: [stage → look/sound/smell, with photo refs]
  • The secrets: [what is not on any card]
  • The story page: [origin, teacher, occasions, in their words]

Cook-along protocol: [shopping together · filming setup · the pestering rules — questions during waiting, silence during the critical bits]

Fidelity testing: [who cooks each written version blind · the tasting pass with the cook · corrections folded back]

Assembly: [format, units for the audience, the calibration appendix, print plan]

If time is short: [the three-dish sprint — one visit, phone camera, their hands and their voice, calibration of just their three core units]

Quality Checks

  • Extraction happens in the kitchen with the dish actually being cooked
  • Their units are calibrated, never replaced
  • Every recipe records tells, not just quantities and times
  • Each dish has its story page in the cook's own phrasing
  • Every written recipe passes a cooked-without-them test before the book
  • A short-time sprint version exists when circumstances need one

Anti-Patterns

  • Asking for the recipe instead of the demonstration. The words they have are not where the recipe lives.
  • Standardising them mid-cook. Measuring cups in their kitchen change the dish and the mood; calibrate silently instead.
  • Recording quantities and skipping the tells. The amounts without "until it smells nutty" is why family recipes die in transcription.
  • Saving only the festival dishes. The Tuesday food is the taste of the family; it is also the first thing lost.
  • Perfecting the book past the cook. The correction pass with them is the point; a posthumous masterpiece is the failure mode.
  • Treating shifted versions as errors. The recipe changed over forty years; keep the variants and say when each was true.

Example Trigger Phrases

  • "Write down grandma's recipes."
  • "How much is some flour?"
  • "Make a family cookbook."
