At a glance

Applies practical Jetpack Compose patterns to Android UI code: state hoisting, one-way data flow, side effects, modifiers, theming and testable composables.

  • Works in 5 steps: Locate the smallest relevant Compose… → Preserve the project's existing… → Separate route/stateful composables from… → …
  • Building a new Compose screen or reusable component
  • SKILL.md covers Quick Start, Workflow, Common Patterns and Anti-Patterns To Avoid, plus 1 more section
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

The quick start tells the agent to find the smallest relevant Compose surface, whether a screen, route, state holder, component, modifier, preview or test, and to keep the project's existing architecture, Material version, theme, navigation, dependency injection and state conventions. Route-level, stateful composables are separated from stateless UI composables when that helps testing and reuse, state flows down and events flow up, and minimal behavior-preserving changes win over broad rewrites.

The workflow first identifies whether code is a screen route, a reusable component, a design-system primitive or a one-off layout, and where its state comes from. Route composables handle ViewModel collection, navigation callbacks, permission launchers and snackbars, while content composables render immutable state and callbacks such as `onRetry`. State is hoisted to the lowest common owner, with `rememberSaveable` for user input that should survive recreation. Effect APIs like `LaunchedEffect` and `DisposableEffect` are used only when their lifecycle matches, with stable keys.

When your agent uses it

  • Building a new Compose screen or reusable component
  • Refactoring composables that mix state handling with rendering
  • Reviewing Compose code for side-effect and state-ownership mistakes
  • Explaining state hoisting and unidirectional data flow in a Compose codebase

Example prompts

  • “Refactor the settings screen so the route composable owns the ViewModel and the content is stateless.”
  • “Review this composable for misuse of LaunchedEffect keys.”
  • “Build a search results screen in Compose that follows our existing navigation style.”

Requirements

  • An Android project that uses Jetpack Compose

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Locate the smallest relevant Compose surface: screen, route, state holder, reusable component, modifier, preview, or test.
  2. Preserve the project's existing architecture, Material version, theme, navigation style, DI, and state management conventions.
  3. Separate route/stateful composables from stateless UI composables when it improves testability and reuse.
  4. Keep state ownership explicit: UI state flows down, events flow up, and side effects live at clear lifecycle boundaries.
  5. Prefer minimal, behavior-preserving changes over broad architectural rewrites.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit cd22acf. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Jetpack Compose Patterns loads about 1.7k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 89 tokens; SKILL.md has 866 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~89
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.7k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 866 words (~1,697 tokens).
