At a glance

Looks up stored agent memories by keyword or ID and prints compact one-line results instead of full detail.

  • Works in 3 steps: Parse query → Search → Display
  • Checking whether a decision was already recorded in memory
  • SKILL.md covers Execution and Output formatting
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

This skill runs a lighter, quicker search over mem0 memories than a full memory tour. Given a query, it first checks whether the query is actually a memory ID - a bare short hex string, a full UUID, or a citation reference - and if so fetches that single memory directly instead of searching.

Otherwise it searches once, scoped to the current user and project, requesting up to 10 results, and prints each hit as a single numbered line showing its type, an 80-character snippet, its date and its short memory ID so a citation can be resolved later. When nothing matches, it says so by name of the query and project rather than returning an empty list silently.

Because it runs inside a terminal UI that renders Markdown literally, it formats everything as plain text with dashes and spacing instead of headers or bold markup.

When your agent uses it

  • Checking whether a decision was already recorded in memory
  • Resolving a memory citation back to its original content
  • Doing a quick memory lookup without full category detail

Example prompts

  • “Search memory for anything about the auth middleware decision.”
  • “Look up memory mem0:a3f8b2c1 and show me the content.”
  • “Did we already decide on a caching strategy? Search memory.”

Requirements

  • A connected mem0 memory store

Workflow steps

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit b7ad69a. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Mem0 Memory Search loads about 502 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 64 tokens; SKILL.md has 198 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~64
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~502

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

name
mem0-search
description
Searches memories and displays compact one-liner results, or looks up a specific memory by ID. Use for quick memory lookups, checking if a decision was recorded, resolving [mem0:id] citations, or browsing memories without full category detail.

Quick search with compact output. Lighter than /mem0-tour.

Execution

Step 1: Parse query

The user provides a search query: /mem0-search auth middleware

If no query provided, ask: "What should I search for?"

Memory ID detection: If the query matches any of these patterns, treat it as a direct memory ID lookup instead of a search:

  • Bare hex: ^[a-f0-9]{8}$ (short ID) or ^[a-f0-9]{8}-[a-f0-9-]+$ (full UUID)
  • Citation ref: [mem0:<hex>] — extract the hex portion

When an ID is detected:

  1. Call get_memory(<id>) directly (if short ID, try as prefix of full UUID)
  2. If found, skip to Step 3 and display the single result
  3. If not found, fall through to search using the ID as query text

Call search_memories once with the user's question: query=<user's query>, filters={"AND": [{"user_id": "<id>"}, {"app_id": "<pid>"}]}, top_k=10.

Step 3: Display

Show compact results:

## mem0 search: "<query>" (<N> results)

1. [decision] Auth module uses JWT with RS256 keys (2025-05-15) [mem0:a3f8b2c1]
2. [anti_pattern] Don't use symmetric HS256 — leaked in env (2025-05-10) [mem0:7e2d9f4a]
3. [convention] All middleware in src/middleware/ (2025-05-08) [mem0:c4d5e6f7]

Format: <number>. [<type>] <content, 80 chars> (<date>) [mem0:<short_id>]

If no results:

No memories matching "<query>" for project <project_id>.

Output formatting

IMPORTANT: Do NOT use markdown in your output. OpenCode TUI renders text verbatim — markdown like bold, ## headers, and | table | syntax appears as raw characters. Use plain text with indentation for structure. Use dashes for lists. Use spaces to align columns instead of markdown tables.

© mem0ai, Apache-2.0. Rendered from Markdown: HTML in the file is shown as text, images as links, and headings moved down two levels. Raw file

Can I use Mem0 Memory Search in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add mem0ai/mem0 --skill mem0-search -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/mem0-search, .gemini/skills/mem0-search, .github/skills/mem0-search and .opencode/skills/mem0-search in your project.

What does Mem0 Memory Search need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Mem0 Memory Search is instructions for the agent only. Our summary lists: A connected mem0 memory store.

Does Mem0 Memory Search access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Mem0 Memory Search safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Mem0 Memory Search use?

Mem0 Memory Search is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Mem0 Memory Search use?

About 502 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
