What it does

Fast Verify is an agent skill from MAGA2010/hackathon-run. Verifies the demo path runs end-to-end by executing each step in order, recording the actual outcome, and stopping at the first failure with a diagnostic. Use before any demo or submission to catch breakage under time pressure.

Its SKILL.md is about 890 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 5 other files, including scripts and reference files (for example `references/error-patterns.md`, `scripts/diagnose.py` and `scripts/verify_step.py`).

The licence is MIT.

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Load the demo path
  2. Run each step in order
  3. Diagnose the first failure
  4. Write outputs

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit de3bcfb. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 2 files in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Fast Verify loads about 893 tokens when it runs, and up to ~1.2k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 60 tokens; SKILL.md has 299 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~60
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~893
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~1.2k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

Input contract

Required:

  • repo_root: project root
  • demo_path: ordered list of steps (from .hackathon/state/plan.json or user-supplied)

Optional:

  • .hackathon/state/verify.json (previous run, for diff)
  • time_budget_minutes: stop verifying after this elapses (default 10)

Execution

1. Load the demo path

If plan.json exists, take plan.demo_path. Otherwise, prompt the user for a list of demo steps.

2. Run each step in order

For each step:

  1. Determine the verification command (see scripts/verify_step.py).
  2. Capture stdout, stderr, exit code.
  3. Classify outcome:
    • PASS: exit code 0 and expected outcome met
    • FAIL: exit code != 0 OR expected outcome missing
    • SKIP: verification command not applicable (e.g. no browser available)
  4. Record attempt, expected, actual, status, duration.

Hard rule: stop at the first FAIL. Do not pretend later steps passed.

3. Diagnose the first failure

If a step fails, run scripts/diagnose.py:

  • Extract the error signature (last 5 lines of stderr).
  • Match against known patterns in references/error-patterns.md.
  • Suggest a one-line minimal fix.
  • Provide a re-verification command.
4. Write outputs
  • .hackathon/state/verify.json (matches verify.schema.json)
  • .hackathon/artifacts/fast-verify-output.md (human-readable run log)
  • .hackathon/state/plan.json (syncs mapped features[].passes + evidence)

Output contract

Files written:

  • .hackathon/state/verify.json (matches src/state/schemas/verify.schema.json)
  • .hackathon/artifacts/fast-verify-output.md (human-readable run log)

Acceptance criteria

  • Verifies in demo-path order.
  • Records actual outcome per step.
  • Stops at first failure.
  • Cannot mark unverified items as PASS.
  • Synchronizes mapped demo-step results back to plan.features[].passes.
  • Emits a one-line fix suggestion for the failing step.

Failure modes

ModeBehavior
Demo path emptyRefuse; ask user to run scope-knife first
Step 1 already failsStop, do not run step 2; report exact failing step
No plan.json and no demo_pathRefuse; cannot verify without a path
Verification command missingMark step SKIP; do not pretend it passed
Diagnose regex finds no matchEmit raw stderr signature + suggest a generic rebuild

Trigger phrases

  • "will it work"
  • "test the demo"
  • "smoke test"
  • "does it still run"
  • "verify the path"

Can I use Fast Verify in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add MAGA2010/hackathon-run --skill fast-verify -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/fast-verify, .gemini/skills/fast-verify, .github/skills/fast-verify and .opencode/skills/fast-verify in your project.

What does Fast Verify need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Fast Verify needs Python for the scripts in its folder. Our summary lists: Python 3.

Does Fast Verify access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Fast Verify safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.

What licence does Fast Verify use?

Fast Verify is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Fast Verify use?

About 893 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.6k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 338 tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.

What are the alternatives to Fast Verify?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Fast Verify: Verified Script Execution (HKUDS/OpenSpace, 7.8k stars), Verify (asgeirtj/system_prompts_leaks, 69k stars), Execute (alirezarezvani/claude-skills, 28k stars) and Debugging Executions (n8n-io/n8n, 207k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.
