At a glance

Audits a project's .agents/skills folder for duplicate, overlapping, stale or broken skills and suggests merge or delete candidates, weekly or after skill changes.

  • Works in 6 steps: Inventory → Detect overlap / redundancy → Description and invocation boundaries → …
  • Running a weekly check on a project's skill catalog
  • SKILL.md covers Procedure, Output rules and What NOT to do
  • Calls rg and git

What it does

The skill is a periodic review of project-local skills so the catalog does not drift into confusion. It recommends a weekly cadence, or a review after any week in which more than one skill was added or renamed. Step one builds an inventory that includes symlinked skills, reusing helpers in package.json scripts or .agents/scripts when they exist and otherwise using find commands for the count and body lengths, grouping skills by domain and noting recent additions from the git log.

Step two looks for overlap: identical descriptions, tasks that fit several descriptions, see-also references to skills that no longer exist, and content duplicated from AGENTS.md. It lists common false positives that should not be merged, such as db-migrations versus drizzle. Step three checks that each description states the skill's purpose and boundary clearly, matches its body, and avoids broad triggers or stale names.

When your agent uses it

  • Running a weekly check on a project's skill catalog
  • Finding skills with duplicate or overlapping descriptions
  • Cleaning up cross-references to renamed or deleted skills

Example prompts

  • “Audit the skills under .agents/skills and list merge or delete candidates.”
  • “Which skills added this week overlap with existing ones?”
  • “Check that each skill description still matches its body and flag broad triggers.”

Requirements

  • A project with a .agents/skills folder

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Inventory
  2. Detect overlap / redundancy
  3. Description and invocation boundaries
  4. Stale-skill check
  5. Cross-reference integrity
  6. Output report

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 31b02b5. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • rg
    • git

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Skills Audit loads about 1.7k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 42 tokens; SKILL.md has 813 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~42
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.7k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 813 words (~1,718 tokens).

“Periodic review of the project-local skill set under .agents/skills/. The goal is to catch drift before the catalog becomes confusing — too many skills, overlapping triggers, descriptions that no longer match the body, references to skills that were renamed/deleted.”
