What it does

Dev Rules is an agent skill from kubernetes-sigs/agent-sandbox, published by the product's own GitHub organization. Enforces project-specific development rules and conventions.

Its SKILL.md is about 450 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Development. It works with Kubernetes and GitHub. The repository describes itself as: agent-sandbox enables easy management of isolated, stateful, singleton workloads, ideal for use cases like AI agent runtimes and reinforcement learning (RL). The licence is Apache-2.0.

When your agent uses it

  • Development work in your project

Example prompts

  • “Use the dev-rules skill to enforce project-specific development rules and conventions”
  • “/dev-rules”

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Go Development: Follow standard Kubernetes Go patterns and best practices.
  2. AI-Assisted Code Reviews
  3. API Conventions: Always use the k8s-api-conventions skill when modifying APIs.
  4. Creating Pull Requests: When creating a Pull Request, always use and fill out the project's PR template (.github/pull_request_template.md).

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit cd0761d. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Dev Rules loads about 447 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 18 tokens; SKILL.md has 228 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~18
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~447

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Development Rules

Purpose

This skill ensures that AI agents contributing to this project follow project-specific rules regarding code review and style to maintain compliance and quality.

Instructions

  1. Go Development: Follow standard Kubernetes Go patterns and best practices.
  2. AI-Assisted Code Reviews:
    • Do NOT directly apply code suggestions from CodeRabbit (or any AI review bot) via the GitHub UI. Doing so adds the AI bot as a co-author to the commit. Since AI bots cannot sign the Kubernetes CLA, this will cause the CLA check to fail and block the PR. Manual review and application of suggestions are required.
    • Once the initial AI review (e.g., by CodeRabbit) is complete, ensure all review comments are addressed and resolved so the PR is ready for maintainers.
  3. API Conventions: Always use the k8s-api-conventions skill when modifying APIs.
  4. Creating Pull Requests: When creating a Pull Request, always use and fill out the project's PR template (.github/pull_request_template.md).
    • Description: Provide a clear and concise description in the "What this PR does" section.
    • Related Issues: Link related issues using "Fixes #issue" or "Ref link".
    • Release Notes: Fill out the release-note block. Note that automated release notes are generated from the description in the first section, so ensure it is comprehensive. For breaking changes, describe required actions and ask the maintainers to label the PR with release-note-action-required.
