What it does

Cherry Pick PR is an agent skill from kubernetes-sigs/cloud-provider-azure, published by the product's own GitHub organization. Cherry-pick a merged pull request onto a release branch with Prow-style branch naming, manual conflict resolution, targeted validation, and GitHub PR creation. Use when the user wants to backport a PR, cherry-pick a commit to a release branch, or mentions cherry-pick, backport, or porting a fix to an older release.

Its SKILL.md is about 640 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files, including scripts (for example `scripts/cherry_pick_pr.py`).

It sits in Development, covering Pull requests. It works with Kubernetes, GitHub and Git. The repository describes itself as: Cloud provider for Azure. The licence is Apache-2.0.

When your agent uses it

  • The user wants to backport a PR
  • Cherry-pick a commit to a release branch
  • Mentions cherry-pick
  • Porting a fix to an older release

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Run a dry-run first
  2. Start the cherry-pick from a clean working tree
  3. If pick exits with code 3, inspect the conflicted files from the output,
  4. Run targeted validation after a clean cherry-pick
  5. Create the PR only after test reports success
  6. Abandon a failed or stale attempt with

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 0201852. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 1 file in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • python3
    • git
    • gh

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use git and gh, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Cherry Pick PR loads about 636 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 83 tokens; SKILL.md has 250 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~83
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~636

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

Cherry-Pick Pull Requests

When To Use

Use this skill when you need to cherry-pick a merged PR onto a release branch and want the agent to handle the git and GitHub workflow while keeping conflict resolution and test decisions in the loop.

Workflow

Replace <SKILL_DIR> with the path to this skill directory.

  1. Run a dry-run first:
bash
python3 <SKILL_DIR>/scripts/cherry_pick_pr.py pick \
  --pr <number> \
  --target-branch <release-X.Y> \
  --dry-run
  1. Start the cherry-pick from a clean working tree:
bash
python3 <SKILL_DIR>/scripts/cherry_pick_pr.py pick \
  --pr <number> \
  --target-branch <release-X.Y>
  1. If pick exits with code 3, inspect the conflicted files from the output, read the source diff with gh pr diff <number>, resolve the conflicts, stage the files with git add, then continue:
bash
python3 <SKILL_DIR>/scripts/cherry_pick_pr.py continue
  1. Run targeted validation after a clean cherry-pick:
bash
python3 <SKILL_DIR>/scripts/cherry_pick_pr.py test
  1. Create the PR only after test reports success:
bash
python3 <SKILL_DIR>/scripts/cherry_pick_pr.py create-pr
  1. Abandon a failed or stale attempt with:
bash
python3 <SKILL_DIR>/scripts/cherry_pick_pr.py abort

Notes

  • The script refuses to start pick from a dirty working tree.
  • The script refuses to start a new attempt while .git/cherry-pick-pr.json exists. Run abort first.
  • The state file lives under .git/ intentionally so it stays untracked.
  • continue runs git cherry-pick --continue non-interactively.
  • test records passed, failed, or build_failed so the agent can tell the difference between test failures and target-branch compatibility issues.
  • create-pr reads .github/PULL_REQUEST_TEMPLATE.md at runtime and fails if required anchors drift.
  • create-pr expects the source PR to already carry a kind/... label. If it does not, fix that first or update the source PR metadata before creating the cherry-pick PR.
  • Use --chain <branch>... on pick when you want the resulting PR body to append a follow-up /cherrypick ... command for later serialized backports.
