apex-azure-validateWORKFLOW SKILL — Pre-deployment validation for Azure: config, infrastructure (Bicep/Terraform), permissions, prerequisites.
Apex Azure Validate is an agent skill from jonathan-vella/apex. WORKFLOW SKILL — Pre-deployment validation for Azure: config, infrastructure (Bicep/Terraform), permissions, prerequisites. WHEN: 'validate my app', 'check deployment readiness', 'run preflight checks', 'validate azure.yaml', 'validate Bicep', 'test before deploying', 'validate Azure Functions'. DO NOT USE FOR: post-deploy troubleshooting (apex-azure-diagnostics), executing deploys (apex-azure-deploy).
Its SKILL.md is about 1.8k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 20 other files, including reference files (for example `references/infraops-preflight.md`, `references/policy-validation.md` and `references/recipes/README.md`).
It sits in DevOps & Cloud, covering Infrastructure as code and Deployment. It works with Microsoft Azure, Bicep, Terraform and Azure Functions. The repository describes itself as: APEX turns Azure platform engineering requirements into verified, deploy-ready IaC — powered by GitHub Copilot agents, real-time pricing, and built-in compliance. The licence is MIT.
3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit b8e5908. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
npmterraformFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use npm, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Apex Azure Validate loads about 1.8k tokens when it runs, and up to ~11k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 107 tokens; SKILL.md has 597 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from jonathan-vella/apex at commit b8e5908, republished under its MIT licence (© jonathan-vella). 597 words, ~1,801 tokens.

An explicit APEX request or handoff from an APEX step agent uses the APEX branch below. A generic application request uses the generic branch. If ambiguous (including both kinds of state present), ask which workflow to use; directory location or a lone manifest is not proof. Never synthesize approval state to select a branch.

No generic .azure/plan.md is required. Do not invoke generic preparation, recipes, or deployment.Validated.AUTHORITATIVE GUIDANCE — Follow these instructions exactly. This supersedes prior training.
⛔ STOP — PREREQUISITE CHECK REQUIRED
Before proceeding, verify this prerequisite is met:
apex-azure-prepare was invoked and completed →
infra/{iac}/{project}/.azure/plan.mdexists with statusApprovedor laterIf the plan is missing, stop and report the prerequisite. Invoke apex-azure-prepare only when preparation is within the authorized request; validation-only does not authorize it.
The complete workflow ensures success:
apex-azure-prepare→apex-azure-validate→apex-azure-deploy
ask_user — global-rulesThe per-recipe validation commands are bundled in
references/recipes/. Common ones:
azd provision --preview # AZD recipes
bicep build infra/bicep/{project}/main.bicep && bicep lint infra/bicep/{project}/main.bicep
terraform fmt -check && terraform validate && npm run validate:terraform
npm run validate:iac-security-baseline # cross-cutting baseline
npm run validate:all # full repo validator suiteLoad the recipe-specific README to confirm the exact command set for the project's IaC tool.
| # | Action | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Load Plan — Read the generic plan for recipe/configuration; if missing, follow the request-scoped prerequisite rule above | infra/{iac}/{project}/.azure/plan.md |
| 2 | Run Validation — Execute recipe-specific validation commands | recipes/README.md |
| 3 | Build Verification — Build the project and fix any errors before proceeding | See recipe |
| 3a | Verify Roles — Static, report-only review of role assignments; findings go to the IaC owner | role-verification.md |
| 4 | Record Proof — Populate Section 7: Validation Proof with commands run and results | infra/{iac}/{project}/.azure/plan.md |
| 5 | Resolve Errors — Fix failures before proceeding | See recipe's errors.md |
| 6 | Update Status — Only after ALL checks pass, set status to Validated | infra/{iac}/{project}/.azure/plan.md |
| 7 | Return results — Stop for validation-only; authorized deployment requests may continue through apex-azure-deploy approvals | Workflow And Requested Action |
⛔ VALIDATION AUTHORITY
This skill is the ONLY authorized way to set plan status to
Validated. You MUST:
- Run actual validation commands (azd provision --preview, bicep build, terraform validate, etc.)
- Populate Section 7: Validation Proof with the commands you ran and their results
- Only then set status to
ValidatedDo NOT set status to
Validatedwithout running checks and recording proof.
Next action is request-scoped
Return results for validation-only. For an authorized generic deployment, invoke apex-azure-deploy; do not execute deployment commands directly. APEX callers return to their owning step agent.
If any validation failed, fix the issues and re-run apex-azure-validate before proceeding.
Load these on demand — do NOT read all at once:

Apex Azure Validate fits situations like: : post-deploy troubleshooting (apex-azure-diagnostics); executing deploys (apex-azure-deploy).
Run `npx skills add jonathan-vella/apex --skill apex-azure-validate -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.github/skills/apex-azure-validate in jonathan-vella/apex) into .claude/skills/apex-azure-validate in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add jonathan-vella/apex --skill apex-azure-validate -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/apex-azure-validate, .gemini/skills/apex-azure-validate, .github/skills/apex-azure-validate and .opencode/skills/apex-azure-validate in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Apex Azure Validate needs the command-line tools its instructions call (npm and terraform).
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use npm, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Apex Azure Validate is published under the MIT licence (declared in SKILL.md). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 1.8k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 7.2k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 8.8k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.
