What it does

Algolia Local Dev Loop is an agent skill from jeremylongshore/tons-of-skills-marketplace. Create a fast local development loop for Algolia record transforms and search behavior without contaminating shared indices. Use when iterating on search code, fixtures, or client wrappers. Trigger with "Algolia local development", "mock Algolia", or "test search locally".

Its SKILL.md is about 970 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files, including reference files (for example `references/official-docs.md`). Compatibility notes: Designed for Claude Code

It sits in Backend & APIs, covering Search implementation. It works with Algolia. The repository describes itself as: Model-agnostic agent-skills platform with a harness-free canonical layer, verified adapters, and the ccpi package manager. Explore at tonsofskills.com. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Iterating on search code
  • Client wrappers
  • With Algolia local development
  • Test search locally

Example prompts

  • “Algolia local development”
  • “mock Algolia”
  • “test search locally”
  • “/algolia-local-dev-loop”

Requirements

  • Compatibility (from SKILL.md): Designed for Claude Code
  • Pre-approved tools (allowed-tools): Read, Glob, Grep, WebFetch, Write, Edit

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Inspect the current client wrapper, package scripts, fixtures, and test framework.
  2. Extract pure record-shaping and query-building functions with focused unit tests.
  3. Create a typed adapter and mock its application-level responses and failures.
  4. Add an opt-in live test that validates a generated disposable index name.
  5. Write known records, wait, query, assert, and clean up while retaining task receipts.
  6. Document how developers select offline versus live mode and how stale test indices are reported.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 80f86df. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:

    • Read
    • Glob
    • Grep
    • WebFetch
    • Write
    • Edit

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Links to these hosts (documentation or services it may open):

    • algolia.com

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

  • Compatibility

Context cost

Algolia Local Dev Loop loads about 969 tokens when it runs, and up to ~1.3k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 74 tokens; SKILL.md has 393 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~74
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~969
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~1.3k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Algolia Local Development Loop

Overview

This skill combines deterministic offline tests with an optional disposable-index integration test. It makes the local loop useful without pretending a mock reproduces provider ranking, task timing, or authorization.

Prerequisites

  • A named repository, environment, and Algolia application or index in scope
  • The local lockfile and installed client types as implementation authority
  • A safe read-only query or explicitly disposable test target
  • Current first-party documentation for any provider behavior that affects the change

Tool Discipline

Use Read, Glob, and Grep to inspect local code, configuration names, tests, and dependency versions. Use WebFetch only for current official Algolia documentation. Use Write or Edit only after identifying the target files, constraints, and verification plan.

Current Contract

  • Keep record transformation and query construction in pure functions that can be tested offline.
  • Mock only the application-owned client boundary, not internal SDK implementation details.
  • Use unique disposable index names for live checks and never reuse production credentials.
  • Wait for write tasks and clean up live fixtures explicitly.

Authentication

Offline tests need no credential. Optional live tests use a custom key restricted to the disposable prefix and are disabled when credentials are absent.

Instructions

Approval Boundaries

Do not require live credentials for the default test command, share a personal Admin key, or clean up any index outside the validated disposable prefix.

Output

Return the local scripts, test boundary, fixtures, live-test guard, cleanup behavior, and evidence for both credential-free and optional integration modes.

Error Handling

ConditionResponse
Credential absentRun offline tests and report the live test as skipped.
Mock diverges from adapterUpdate the adapter contract and its typed fixture together.
Disposable prefix invalidFail before any network write.
Cleanup failsReport the exact retained index for manual review.

Examples

Use this compact input and expected handoff to calibrate scope and evidence quality.

Input:

text
mode=offline-default; integration=ALGOLIA_LIVE_TEST=1; prefix=dev-$USER-$RUN

Expected handoff:

text
unit=pass; live=skipped; production-index-access=none
