Hackernews is an agent skill from sigcli/sigcli. Interact with Hacker News (news.ycombinator.com) — browse top, new, and best stories, read item details and comment threads, look up user profiles, and search posts via Algolia. Use this skill whenever the user mentions Hacker News, HN, YCombinator news, ycombinator.com, news.ycombinator.com, wants to browse tech news, read HN discussions, search HN posts, or look up HN users. Also trigger when the user pastes an HN URL (e.g. news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12345). Keywords: Hacker News, HN, YC, ycombinator, tech…
Its SKILL.md is about 2k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 29 other files, including scripts and reference files (for example `references/provider-config.yaml`, `scripts/hn_ask.py` and `scripts/hn_best.py`).
It sits in Backend & APIs, covering Search implementation. It works with Algolia. The repository describes itself as: The authentication CLI & Proxy for AI agents. Give agents access, not your credentials. The licence is MIT.
5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 9ba8b35. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Ships 13 files in scripts/ (Python, from the files we listed), which the agent can run.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
python3From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Hackernews loads about 2k tokens when it runs, and up to ~2.2k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 141 tokens; SKILL.md has 648 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.
The full file from sigcli/sigcli at commit 9ba8b35, republished under its MIT licence (© sigcli). 648 words, ~2,041 tokens.

Read operations — use sig run to inject cookie (enables authenticated features like vote status):
sig run hackernews -- bash -c 'python3 <SKILL_DIR>/scripts/hn_top.py --cookie "$SIG_HACKERNEWS_COOKIE" --limit 10'Write operations — require sig run (cookie is mandatory):
sig run hackernews -- bash -c 'python3 <SKILL_DIR>/scripts/hn_vote.py --cookie "$SIG_HACKERNEWS_COOKIE" --id 12345'Env var: SIG_HACKERNEWS_COOKIE
On auth error (401/403): run sig login hackernews automatically (no user prompt), then retry.
All scripts are in <SKILL_DIR>/scripts/. Run via Bash tool.

Item types — Hacker News items have a type field: story, comment, job, poll, pollopt. Stories have title, url, score, and descendants (total comment count). Comments have text and parent.
Item IDs — Numeric IDs found in URLs like news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12345. Get IDs from top/new/best/search results, then use with hn_item.py.
Comment trees — Comments are nested via the kids array. hn_item.py recursively fetches comment trees up to --depth levels. Each comment includes replies for nested children.
Story categories — Use hn_ask.py for Ask HN, hn_show.py for Show HN, hn_jobs.py for job postings.
Algolia search — hn_search.py uses the Algolia HN Search API for full-text search with filtering by type, author, and minimum points.

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add sigcli/sigcli --skill hackernews -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/hackernews, .gemini/skills/hackernews, .github/skills/hackernews and .opencode/skills/hackernews in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Hackernews needs Python for the scripts in its folder and the command-line tools its instructions call (python3). Our summary lists: Python 3.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.
Hackernews is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 2k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 8.2k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 121 tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.
