What it does

Igniteui Angular Skill Authoring is an agent skill from IgniteUI/igniteui-angular. This skill provides rules for writing or updating a SKILL.md in this repository, including frontmatter validation, discovery description markers, and the 500-line body budget. WHEN TO USE: creating or editing skills. WHEN NOT TO USE: writing custom agents or looking up build, test, or lint commands.

Its SKILL.md is about 980 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Agent Workflows, covering Skill authoring. It works with Angular. The repository describes itself as: Ignite UI for Angular is a complete library of Angular UI components with the fastest grids and charts, dock manager, and more. The licence is MIT.

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Frontmatter passes the rules above.
  2. The description includes WHEN TO USE: and WHEN NOT TO USE:.
  3. The body is under 500 lines, and every reference file is linked from SKILL.md.
  4. Public skills include the required MCP server check: igniteui-cli for component usage, igniteui-theming for theming.
  5. The skill is listed in the Skills table in AGENTS.md. Internal skills are also listed in .agents/README.md and…

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 5542bdb. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • npx

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use npx, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Igniteui Angular Skill Authoring loads about 977 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 83 tokens; SKILL.md has 431 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~83
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~977

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Ignite UI for Angular — Skill Authoring

Quick-reference for writing a SKILL.md that agents can discover and load reliably.

Location

  • Internal, contributor-facing skills: .agents/skills/<name>/SKILL.md
  • Public skills that ship with the package: skills/<name>/SKILL.md
  • The folder name must match the name field.

Frontmatter

FieldRules
licenseRequired. Must specify the license under which the skill is released. Default is MIT.
nameRequired. Max 64 characters. Lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens only. No XML tags. No reserved words (anthropic, claude). Use the igniteui-angular- prefix.
descriptionRequired. Non-empty. Max 1,024 characters. No XML tags.

Write the description in the third person: say what the skill covers, then add both markers:

  • WHEN TO USE: the tasks or triggers that should load the skill.
  • WHEN NOT TO USE: nearby tasks it does not cover, naming the skill to use instead.

Agents see only name and description until they load the skill, so the description decides whether it is ever used.

Token Budget

  • Keep the SKILL.md body under 500 lines.
  • If it grows past that, use progressive disclosure: keep the overview and core rules in SKILL.md and move detail into references/<topic>.md files.
  • Link each reference file directly from SKILL.md (one level deep) and say when to read it, so agents load it only when needed.

MCP Servers in Public Skills

Which MCP server a public skill requires depends on what it covers:

Skill coversRequired serverVerification call
Component or grid usage (selectors, imports, inputs, outputs, methods)igniteui-clilist_components with framework: "angular"
Theming (palettes, themes, typography, elevations, component design tokens)igniteui-themingdetect_platform

A skill that covers both, such as building views from a design, requires both servers. For each required server, the skill must:

  • Verify the server before any other step, using the call in the table.
  • If the tool is missing, tell the agent to configure it itself with npx -y igniteui-cli ai-config (or ig ai-config), ask the user to reload, and stop. Continuing without the server happens only at the user's explicit request, with unverified details flagged.
  • Never describe the server as optional or add "when available" fallbacks.

Follow the existing wording in igniteui-angular-components and igniteui-angular-theming.

Checklist

Internal skills are also listed in .agents/README.md and .github/copilot-instructions.md.
