At a glance

Installs an always-on set of rules into your agent's workspace config that cuts filler, hedging and padded closings from its replies.

  • Making an agent's replies shorter and less padded across a whole workspace
  • SKILL.md covers When to Use, Procedure, What gets installed and Verification, plus 2 more sections
  • Runs Shell scripts from its folder; calls bash
  • Removing filler openings and closing offers from agent output

What it does

This is a one-time installer, not a per-turn skill. Running bash install.sh finds the workspace config file (.hermes.md, HERMES.md or AGENTS.md) and writes the rules from prompt.md between BEGIN and END markers. Running it again replaces that block in place and touches nothing else, and bash install.sh --uninstall removes it.

The rules go after specific habits: stock opening phrases and restating the question, structure that buries the answer, closing summaries and offers of follow-up, contrastive phrasing, and sprawling pros-and-cons lists. Rules apply only from a new Hermes session, and Hermes may label the skill dangerous because it edits AGENTS.md, so it has to be installed with the force flag. To check it worked, ask a simple question and expect a short answer without filler.

When your agent uses it

  • Making an agent's replies shorter and less padded across a whole workspace
  • Removing filler openings and closing offers from agent output
  • Reverting the always-on writing rules with the uninstall option

Example prompts

  • “Run the talk-normal installer for this project, then check it by asking what Python is.”
  • “Remove the talk-normal block from my workspace config.”
  • “Replies are too wordy in this repo; install the talk-normal rules.”

Requirements

  • bash
  • A Hermes workspace with .hermes.md, HERMES.md or AGENTS.md

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit d89cf32. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships script files (Shell), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • bash

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Talk Normal loads about 784 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 63 tokens; SKILL.md has 343 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~63
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~784

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Stop LLM slop. A curated system prompt that cuts verbose, corporate-sounding LLM output by 56-73% (measured) while preserving information. Works bilingually (English + Chinese). Installs into your AGENTS.md as an always-on behavior modifier.

talk-normal

A curated system prompt that stops your LLM from writing like a LinkedIn post. Measured: 73% character reduction on GPT-4o-mini, 72% on GPT-5.4, across 10 prompts in English and Chinese, without losing information.

When to Use

Run the installer once per workspace to make your Hermes agent permanently less verbose. This is not a per-turn skill — it is a one-time installer that injects always-on rules into your project's context file.

Procedure

To install or update talk-normal in the current workspace:

bash
bash install.sh

The script auto-detects your workspace config file (.hermes.md, HERMES.md, or AGENTS.md) and injects the prompt between # --- talk-normal BEGIN --- and # --- talk-normal END --- markers. The installer is idempotent: running it again replaces the existing talk-normal block in place with the latest rules. Nothing else in your config file is touched.

To remove:

bash
bash install.sh --uninstall

Start a new Hermes session to take effect.

What gets installed

The contents of prompt.md get injected into your workspace config file. The rules target the specific slop patterns that make LLM output sound corporate and padded:

  • Filler and hedging — banned opening phrases, no throat-clearing, no restating the question
  • Structural discipline — lead with the answer, match depth to complexity, bullets only when genuinely parallel
  • Closing patterns — no summary stamps, no hypothetical follow-up offers, no conditional next-step menus
  • Rhetorical tics — no negation-based contrastive framing, no plain-language restatements
  • Shape of comparisons — give a recommendation with brief reasoning, cap pros/cons lists

Verification

After installing, start a new Hermes session and ask a simple question like "What is Python?". The response should be 3-5 sentences with no filler phrases. Compare against the benchmarks at https://github.com/hexiecs/talk-normal for expected output.

Pitfalls

  • Security scanner: Hermes flags this skill as "DANGEROUS" because it modifies AGENTS.md (persistent prompt modification). This is expected — the skill's entire purpose is injecting always-on prompt rules. Install with hermes skills install --force hexiecs/talk-normal/skill-hermes.
  • Rules only take effect in a new session — Hermes freezes context files at session start.
  • If you have both .hermes.md and AGENTS.md, the installer writes to whichever it finds first (.hermes.md > HERMES.md > AGENTS.md).
