What it does

Changelog is an agent skill from hashicorp/terraform-provider-aws, published by the product's own GitHub organization. Add a .changelog/<PRNUMBER.txt entry for a GitHub Pull Request, commit, and push.

Its SKILL.md is about 380 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Development, covering Changelog and release notes. It works with GitHub and Terraform. The repository describes itself as: The AWS Provider enables Terraform to manage AWS resources. The licence is MPL-2.0.

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Print the generated file contents back to the user.
  2. Run
  3. Never run git push --force, --force-with-lease, or --no-verify. Never switch or create branches.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 64d3359. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • git

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Changelog loads about 378 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 24 tokens; SKILL.md has 173 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~24
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~378

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Skill: Add Changelog Entry

Generate a .changelog/<PR_NUMBER>.txt entry for a GitHub Pull Request, commit it on the current branch, and push.

Authoritative reference: docs/changelog-process.md. When this skill and that document disagree, the document wins.

When to use

Trigger this skill when the user:

  • Says "add changelog", "create changelog entry", "write a release note", or similar.

Do not trigger for:

  • Edits to CHANGELOG.md directly (that file is generated — never modify it by hand).
  • PRs that are docs-only, test-only, code refactors, or dependency bumps with no operator-visible effect.

Do not generate a changelog file if the PR changes do not affect the terraform practitioners in the end.

Do not look at pre-existing changelog files when given the PR, not even if it is present in the diff.

Inputs

  • The <PR_NUMBER> and diff are available from the PR context for which the cloud agent was invoked.

Show, commit and push

  1. Print the generated file contents back to the user.

  2. Run:

    bash
    git add .changelog/<PR_NUMBER>.txt
git commit -m "Add CHANGELOG for #<PR_NUMBER>"
    git push
  3. Never run git push --force, --force-with-lease, or --no-verify. Never switch or create branches.

Questions about Changelog

What does Changelog do?

Add a .changelog/<PRNUMBER.txt entry for a GitHub Pull Request, commit, and push. Changelog is an agent skill from hashicorp/terraform-provider-aws, published by the product's own GitHub organization.txt entry for a GitHub Pull Request, commit, and push.

When should I use Changelog?

Changelog fits situations like: tasks that involve Changelog and release notes.

How do I install Changelog in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add hashicorp/terraform-provider-aws --skill changelog -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.copilot/skills/changelog in hashicorp/terraform-provider-aws) into .claude/skills/changelog in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Changelog in Codex?

Run `npx skills add hashicorp/terraform-provider-aws --skill changelog -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (.copilot/skills/changelog in hashicorp/terraform-provider-aws) into .agents/skills/changelog in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Changelog in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add hashicorp/terraform-provider-aws --skill changelog -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/changelog, .gemini/skills/changelog, .github/skills/changelog and .opencode/skills/changelog in your project.

What does Changelog need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Changelog needs the command-line tools its instructions call (git).

Does Changelog access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Changelog safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Changelog use?

Changelog is published under the MPL-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Changelog use?

About 378 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 1.5k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Changelog?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Changelog: Cutting A Release (TriliumNext/Trilium, 38k stars), Mole CLI Release Flow (tw93/Mole, 70k stars), Draft Release Notes (jamiepine/voicebox, 57k stars) and Mole Release Notes Publisher (tw93/Mole, 70k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.

Who maintains Changelog?

hashicorp (a GitHub organization, an official publisher) maintains it in hashicorp/terraform-provider-aws, which has 11,111 GitHub stars. The repository holds 17 skills in this directory. The repository was last updated on October 9, 2026.
